Frustration - no playback of AVI-files
« on: January 07, 2008, 12:51:19 pm »

After a fresh install of Windows XP (and also MC12.0.400) I noticed that MC does not playback avi-files.

A deep sigh ... sorry to say, but I hate this ..
I have to spend time on vainlessly searching in the MC-forum for a possible solution and after half an
hour I gave up.

MC used to play my avi-files without any problems but now all of a sudden it doesnot.

Likely I either have to look for this, or maybe search for that, or try to do so-and-so and if that does
not work, find a workaround by installing whatever other stuff, or read a the flwg bla-bla article at URL...

Sorry to sound a bit bitter but actually I expect MC to do the job without me trying to find a solution
as to why it suddenly doesn't.

Seems there is no alternative ... so here is the question:

Can anybody out there pls help me out ?

thanks

btw: XP Pro SP2 inc latest updates.

AVI is MIcrosoft's universal container format for various video formats. The audio and video streams inside it can be encoded with many different codecs.

MC supports video playback through the installed codes and OS level features like DirectShow. By default Windows has only a few old and common codecs installed. Obviously your old XP setup had the needed codecs installed and the new one hasn't yet.

Many MC users have succesfully resolved codec problems by installing the CCCP codec pack.

More info is here: http://wiki.jrmediacenter.com/index.php/DirectShow_Playback_Guide

Oops, I didn't notice this. (Did you edit the post?)

Could you tell what codecs GSpot uses? Can GSpot render the files? Also, could you provide detailed info about what happens when you try to play the files?

Make sure avi is checked as a MC file association.
Also confirm that you have divx/xvid encoded files as formats associated with MC.
That's the easy stuff. After that you need to check your codecs as the previous responder noted.

Chances are that no player will play these avi files now that you've reinstalled windows, unless your codecs are installed and set up properly; I'd say it's simply just not MC's fault. I know it can be very frustrating, but knowing where to place the blame prevents software/hardware companies undeservedly getting a bad reputation.

Hm... I did send a reply telling that GSpots advised:

"(Src)-->>--(A)-->[AVI Splitter ]>--(B)-->[DivX Decoder Filter ]>--(C)-->[Video Renderer ]
Failed to connect Output pin 0x03cc3a64 ("XForm Out") on DivX Decoder Filter to input pin 0x04412e4c ("VMR Input0") on filter 0x01f381da ("Video Renderer").ConnectDirect() failed. Error: 0x80040207: [unknown]

"

One way or the other the reply did not get thru. Weird.

Anyway, it seems the solution is to install DivX - which I did and now the .avi's play well again.

Wud it not make sense to at least recommend to have DivX installed along with MC  rather than
that users have to find out themselves ?

Well anyway ...

thanks for the feedback
