Further plans for Album Grouping feature
« on: January 12, 2008, 07:53:12 am »

I've not tried the latest version, but I have not seen any changes in this section lately. So I just have to ask.
Are there no plans of refining the options for Album Grouping?

What I really miss is the ability to set my own context for the Album title line. Want to control how it looks and wich fields is included.
An option to collaps all albums would also be handy.

Any thoughts?

The album grouping lile takes its cue from the artist field, it seems, i.e. BSG s2 as you see here gets tagged with VA. However, since this album only has one track by an artist other than Bear McCreary (original theme by Richard Gibbs) I'd rather have it listed sa Bear McCreary, which is why I've set him as album artist. As you can see, in the pane MC does consider it to be his album, and it should do so in the album grouping title too...

Totally agree. I think it should be somewhat user configurable which fields to use though.

You can configure it in an roundabout way:
1. Create a calculated user field with say: [Album] by [Album Artist (auto)] ([Year])
2. Choose that field for the grouping

Unfortunately you seem to lose all sorting options that way and it's strictly sorted alphabetically by Album then.

I was about to suggest the same (in the other "album grouping" thread too).

If sorting e.g. by "year" is preferred it is possible to alter the calculated field accordingly,
for example: [Date (year)] - [Album] by [Album Artist (auto)] ([Genre])

If the grouping feature can not be configured individually, it should at least follow the given sorting of the view (without grouping anabled) as close as possible... Unortunately, the sorting with enabled grouping has not much in commen with the "orginal" sorting now...

I've wanted to use grouping in playing now, but it won't honor the existing order in there.

Ok. That's a start at least. But where do you select the field exactly?
I can't find it anywhere in build 403. Not mentioned in the help it seems. It's added in later builds?

It was added in 12.0.409, so it's in the latest 12.0.410 release.

Nice! I can finally use it now.
Does exectly what I want :)

Thanks John

Would be more logical if you could set the caption when right clicking the title maby. But who cares? It works!
