DVD/Video metadata / cover art slurping from Internet
« on: January 10, 2008, 05:09:12 pm »

Hi everyone, I'm new here. I'm giving Media Center 12 a shot at cataloging my stuff, since it works well with NetRemote. I've got  probably 70 DVDs ripped to a drive. After importing them, I noticed there seems to be no way to auto-populate metadata fields and cover art from the numerous internet movie databases out there. I'm really really confused by this - there are like 10 other DVD cataloging programs out there that can do this, such as

Collectorz.com Movie Collector
Ant Movie Catalog
Movie Label
DVDProfiler from Invelos
Movie Collector Pro
Movie Organizer Deluxe
MovieTrack
Eric's Movie Database
MyMovies
DVDPro

The way I would like to use this product is mainly as a database for NetRemote to connect to, so I can browse my media using my pocketPC and start it playing on my HTPC. NetRemote supports displaying all the info about the media files that Media Center provides. I don't want to spend any time tweaking any of the other stuff in Media Center such as the interface, making playlist collections, or anything like that. I just want to rip a dvd, import it into Media Center, and have the metadata auto-populate.

There are tons of freely accessible movie databases out there already, they just have to be interfaced with:

ACDrifter.com - Asian Cinema Drifter (English)
AnimeNFO.com (English)
DVDEmpire.com (English)
Exler.ru (Russian)
Kinomania.ru (Russian)
RussianDVD.com (Russian)
ShareReactor.ru (Russian)
KinoExpert.ru (Russian)
IDDK.ru (Russian)
AniDB.net (Anime movies database, English)
Discshop.se (Swedish)
World-Art.ru (Animation, Russian)
movie.naver.com (Korean movie database)
moviecity.nl (Dutch movie database)
cinematografo.it (Italian movie database)
christiancinema.com (Christian Movie Database)
cinemagia.ro (Romanian Movie Database)
AlloCine.fr (French Movie Database)
kinopoisk.ru (Russian Movie Database)
csfd.cz (Czech Movie Database)
Libreriauniversitaria.it (Italian)
FilmUp.com (filmup.leonardo.it, Italian)
cinema.castlerock.it (Italian)
culturalianet.com (Spanish)
Amazon.com (English)
Amazon.co.uk (English)
Amazon.de (German)
Amazon.fr (French)
Amazon.jp (Japan)

Am I missing something here, or is this feature really missing from Media Center 12? Is there a plug-in that can do this? ??

Thanks,
-Jerimiah

Let me re-phrase the question:

Does everyone using this product with movies actually type in all the metadata by hand for each movie in their library?

I guess you found out that it is not possible right now to auto-populate the metadata for movies.

Concerning your second question, there is no way I could take the time to do that for my 700 something movies, especially since I already have all my DVDs cataloged in DVDProfiler.  There is a feature request for DVDProfiler support at the top of the boards right now.  So, hopefully this is something they will add support for some day.  It would be great to do something for television shows as well.

I don't know about any technical or legal details surrounding them, but there are two open source projects designed to let applications import the movie and TV data from their websites respectively here http://www.movie-xml.com/ and http://www.thetvdb.com/  Maybe they could be used someday as well?
