m4a import - extremely slow - is this normal
« on: January 21, 2008, 09:28:22 am »

My audio files are exclusively mp3 - until today.  I am importing some m4a files and the import process is crawling at about 1 file every several seconds.  The files seem to work okay on playback.  Is it normal for m4a files to import slowly?  My forum and wiki search didn't reveal an answer.

MC tries to use DirectShow filters to handle m4a files, and falls back to Quicktime engine when DirectShow fails. When DirectShow fails, the time-out is pretty long. That could explain the slowness of importing. Do you have proper DirectShow filters installed on your computer? See the following wiki articles for more detail:

DirectShow playback guide

If you do not wish to use DirectShow (but we encourage you to use it because it gives you more features), you can use Apple Quicktime engine.  Go to Tools -> Options -> Playback Engine -> DirectShow Playback Settings..., and uncheck the checkbox next to "m4a" in the list on the right hand side.
