how is a new user supposed to just plain use it?
« on: August 08, 2002, 06:59:32 pm »

OK, my problems of accessing the internet may have been related to the way my computer is setup for other applications, but I had to find that out on my own.  I now ask this ...

Whenever I insert a CD, it automatically wants to play.  I stop it because I just want to rip it.  However, next ... *ALL* I get is "please select a file to play" ... to which I'd like to respond ... "GIVE ME AN OPTION!!!"

Come on ... at least give me an OPTION to let things work.  I want to rip the disk, but regardless of what I want to do (play or rip) all it does is ask me which song I want to play, but whenever I click on the disk, it shows NOTHING ... how am I supposed to tell it what I want to play or rip, when it wont give me a list of songs to choose from?  What am I doing wrong?  I want MJ to work, but everything I do seems to not work?  Give me a real answer ... does this program (which I have already given my $24.98 even though my bank account shows that I am at currently about -$2,000.00) work???

Hi rickscogland,
I have been having a similar problem, only I can usually rip about 3 to 6 CD's then the right window goes blank.  The tree view shows that MJ knows there is an album in the drive, but nothing is listed to the right!  I have no idea what is causing it, but if I close MJ and reboot, it works fine for a while.
Go to your Help Menu/System Info, then Copy to clipboard.
Come here and paste your system info here.

Rick

Are you using Win 98, any version? I had the same thing happen many times until I switched to XP. Part of the problem lies with the way Auto-Insert and CDDB are reacting to one another. Not very well.

In Device Manager try disabling the auto-insert. I don't remember if you have to re-boot or not. To get CDDB info you have to 'select' the cd from the tree on the left and it will then get the info without playing.

In MJ in order to rip the cd, the view must be from CD-DVD-Handhelds. Not the playing now window. If you try to rip from playing now you will usually get the error message that you see now.

Hope this helps.

I'll post the info Chico suggested when I get home tonight.  I like the idea of disabling the auto-start upon inserting a disk ... I don't really want it to autostart anyway, so it would be nice if that solved my problems.  Hopefully, my PC allows me to disable it.

By the way, I am using Windows ME.

The weird part is, when I first started using MJ, everything worked fine.  It wasn't until about 4-6 weeks of use that I started having bugs appear.

Hi,

> The weird part is, when I first started using MJ, everything worked fine. It wasn't until about 4-6 weeks of use that I started having bugs appear.

I have seen this sort of behavior many times with Win98 SE.  Sometimes I cannot repeat it for a while.  There are many loose ends in the code STILL, but are often dismissed as "Your unique" problems.

Some of them I'm tired of reporting, as the write up is often too comlicated and I'm to furious to bother.

In general MJ is getting better and some features already work well.  But in other areas, more work and more reports are needed.  Hand in there.

To prevent autoplay:

First check your drive properties and disable autoplay (I believe you could do this on all Win versions from '95 on). If that doesn't work hold the shift key down for a few seconds after inserting the CD (this always works and is a standard windows procedure).

It appears that disabling auto-play upon CD insert has fixed the problem!  For what it's worth, here's my system info ...

Rick,

You may want to get the latest version of MJ also. Check in Interact for this thread 'Media Jukebox 8.0.346'.

Just a little info here, Windows ME is notorious for errant operation. Mother-in-law had it and had a crash at least twice a day. And she never did anything that was very cpu intensive like MJ can be. Finally couldn't take anymore and installed XP. No more ugliness from her machine.

I had 98SE until about two weeks ago. Always the latest drivers and patches, blah, blah, blah..... I would also get goofy things happening to me. XP now installed. No more hair pulling and head scratching. Something to think about.
