Feature suggestion: Play CD without transition effects
« on: August 08, 2002, 05:11:52 am »

Hi,

Today I listened to a mixed CD and found the transition effects quite annoying. I haven't found an option to turn the things off _only_ for CD-playing (I like transitions if I play MP3s).

Is it possible to include some function to play a CD without gaps, without transitions, simply track-by-track (as DAO does for CDRs).

Thanks.

What are the transition effects you're talking about? I thought a standard, store-bought CD just played the way it was recorded.

Settings > Options > Device Settings. Do not use digital playback.

Or change the gap spacing if you prefer digital.

That is correct, Mr. Head. I did a little research and if you set both playback options to "gapless", the songs that should join together do and the ones that don't won't. No wierdness.

I would prefer setting this _only_ for CD-playing. It is not easy using if I have to switch these options, if I play (mixed) CDs, and switch them again, if I would like to play MP3s.

Did I clearify my point? If not, ask again ;-)

Thanks.

Mirko,

Have you tried this to see what it does? The gap spacing thing I mean.

I have both options in playback set on "Gapless" and have had no problem. Both CD's and MP3's play well with no change to the setup. I suppose that a song that needs space between it and the next song has that space built in as part of the song. All gapless does in that case is join two silent passages together seamlessly. If you play one track that should be joined with another track out of sequence, it may sound funny but there will be no overlap in playback, it will just start or stop suddenly.

The problem is: I do want the smooth transitions playing MP3s. But I don't want them playing CDs. So I think I need two different settings here, because I don't want to go into options and switch them every time I switch the media I play.

Thanks.

I started messing with this a little more and see what you mean Mirko. Even with ALT pressed it does not do it, though it should according to the help file.

More digging....

Mirko try these settings from the playback options.

From the >> 'Alternate Tab' << set 'Between Tracks' to 'Standard'.

And adjust the slider to 'Gapless' (all the way to the left).

Seeking set to 'Standard'. 'Stop' however you want. (Mine is immediate)

Leave the >> 'Default' << tab settings how you normally would for mp3 playback.

Chuck a cd in and see what happens now. I get the cd to playback with no overlap, and mp3 playback with cross-fade.

I did setup it so as you suggested. There _are_ transition effects. I tried pressing "ALT" during clicking play, but this has no effect.

It would be _very_ welcome, if this could be made possible. I hate mixed CDs mixed again ;-)

I guess it would be the cds you had mixed before that would cause this. Oh well, tried.

It does almost sound like it crosses with the above mentioned set-up on original cds. But I think because there is no gap it is almost instant and plays a trick on the ears. Again this is with an original.

Keep pestering the J River guys. yukyukyuk!

The CDs are: Every single one from Kontor, Chartmix (for testing purposes, only) and DJ Convention...

These are _all_ original ones. But you are right. Even my self-mixed ones are mixed again.

Hello? Does someone from JRiver read or has a tip for me? Make an option for "normal" playback and I'm happy :-)

You have to switch the playback mode before playing.  Right-click the far right player button for fast access.

Alternate playback modes work when ALT is held down while performing the action, but it's not a lasting thing.  Once ALT isn't held down, it uses the regular settings again.

Ok. The fast way is better than the default.
But isn't it possible to include such an option? I think it will be welcome to more people than only me (although I've got the feeling, that the mixed CDs are not heard that much here).

Thanks anyway.
