BUG in connection with iPod
« on: February 04, 2008, 02:56:20 am »

First the iPod is configured and loaded with tracks and playlists on one PC runing MC12 (422). Then I wanted to add a playlist and tracks from another PC also runing MC12 (422). Both MC12 configured so that tracks not in the sync list was not deleted. The new added tracks was encoded and transfered ok but all old playlist were deleted on the iPod (tracks coresponding to those playlists was not deleted)! Am i missing domething or is this a bug?

Currently when you perform a sync, all playlists are replaced.

After some internal discussion, we think this should instead honor the "Delete files not in sync" option.  This will be changed in a coming build.

Thank you! I think that makes sense. It also offers functionality that increases competetiveness against iTunes and MS MP ;D

I’d like to discuss if some functionality would be impacted by this change. I have hundreds of playlist which I periodically tweak.  This includes:

1) updating the (audio) files but keeping the name of the files the same,
2) changing songs in the playlists,
3) changing the name of the playlist, and, of course,
4) adding or deleting playlists

In the current MC12, I am assured that my playlists and the actual music files on the iPod are always updated on a sync with all these types of changes. However, with the proposed change and for those who do not check the “delete files option” option, it isn’t obvious to me that all of the playlist maintenance items listed above will be updated on the handheld.  It seems to me that some of that maintenance might not be detected unless there is a playlist replacement.

I keep the “delete files option not in sync” checked, so my needs will almost certainly not be adversely impacted by the proposed change.  I am inclined to agree with the change, but I wanted to post this for others to comment.

When this change is made, maybe the option should read "delete files/playlists not in sync"

John

As far as I understand there will be no change to the functionality you talk about. In fact the functionality will be increased as the opportunity to omit deletion of playlists on the iPod is added (when trying to copy a playlist from a different PC than the originator). I think that one of the great aspects of the MC player are the freedom of the user to totaly configure the product. There is no "policing" and allmost every aspect of the player can be adapted and changed. The downside of this is of course added requirement of knowledge and caution from the user.  The proposed change wil increase the functionality and ensure that playlists is treated in the same way as tracks and other files on the iPod and require an action from the user if he wants something deleted during sync (asuming that the system defaults to a "fail-safe" state where no deletion of material on the iPod not in the current sync list is this state)
