MC unresponsive when handheld unavailable...
« on: November 29, 2007, 12:52:59 pm »

Earlier last week, I defined a Windows network share as a handheld to convert and sync my library.

When that system is offline, MC will hang and be entirely unresponsive (even screen updates are dead) for about 30-45 seconds.

Should I not define a handheld this way, or is this an MC problem?

Thanks.  In the meantime, I'll just get my coffee after I launch MC for the day.  :-)

Unfortunately, this 45 second delay occurs under multiple circumstances, and has become painful.

What is the best way to avoid these hangs (besides keeping the remote system running) until a fix is found?

Bump.  Any news on this issue, or possibility it will be resolved soon?

Thanks.

We handle this a lot better in build 12.0.425. You will have to delete and re-create your virtual devices for it to work.

If the network is down, we ignore virtual devices that are network drives. But, if the network isn't down we'll still try to contact all virtual devices. So, if the network is up up but a particular network drive is down, you may still see a delay.

Will this help with your situation?

I haven't had a chance to test this just yet.  I've deleted the virtual device, and will set it up again shortly.

The network will not be down; only the PC with the remote share will be down.

I create a virtual device via a windows share to my wife's PC, so that I can sync my FLAC library to her system (converting to mp3's so that she can sync those at her convenience to her own handheld which doesn't support FLAC.

Her system is typically powered down, hence my MC hangs during the virtual device discovery.

So, it doesn't sound like this fix will resolve my issue.  Is there something else I should do as an alternative to avoid the delays, yet be able to sync?

Thanks,
MrC

We may have to require that you activate virtual devices before we enumerate them.

Hi SwellGuy,

It appears the problems is not resolved.

Yesterday, I created a new UNC virtual device (a Windows share), deleting all previous handhelds.  I performed the sync, and upon completion, shutdown MC.  The remote Windows machine was shutdown, and restarting MC yields the 30-45 second hang.

We haven't implemented the explicit user activation of virtual devices yet.

No problem.  I thought "We may have to require" meant "test out the recent changes, and if that doesn't work, then we will implement..."
