A sugggestion for MC 13
« on: February 15, 2008, 12:30:32 pm »

I feel tha J River Media Center is a fabulous program. Unfortunately, it is not friendly to classical music lovers and requires a lot of time and effort to set up for classical music.

Some suggestions for the next version:

1. Have a wizard that would prompt the user to set up a scheme for classical. First a single field is necessary that referrs to a work, not a song. The name of a work should have subparts that include the composer, name of the work, and the performing artist(s) in one field (Beethoven, Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61:  Krebbers/Haitnk/Concrrtgebauw);
2. A view scheme should be made to correlate composers, genres, and artists to the "works";
3. A means of linking to text on the web which might contain a eg a review, a libretto, etc

This is something that becomes possible if there was a way to define viewschemes & fields, in text, that can then be shared.

Yes. This is what I have done manually, as have other classical fans. It should be easy to build it in. I'm sure thousands of classical music fans must use MC.  You just need to make the effort on the next version.

That's not a half bad idea.  I don't think you want every type of view scheme actually loaded in MC, but a drop down template of view scheme 'types' would be great.  Expecially if users could submit theirs and share them.

I think this would be good for new users to easily see the value in view schemes too.

13 is not a lucky number, maybe they should just jump to MC14

So JRiver is supposed configure pre-fab View Schemes?

Do I get my vote for Jamaican Rock Steady 45 rpms with pre-set fields for Matrix, Producer, Studio, etc. ?

Just seems like a lot of work to produce something that the end user usually tweaks to meet their specific personal needs.

Besides, half the fun of MC is configuring view schemes.

Who cares about version numbers, I mean the current build 'feels' like MC 15.  Maybe they should move to more general name changes when MC has a MAJOR shift in functionality, like 'Media Center Paradigm'

It's only because I am old enough to have known people who road around in a horse and buggy, when they had to hold their hats to keep them from blowing off.

It's true.

Media Center Two Point Oh.

Like web 2.0.

Wasn't the rename pretty recent?  Maybe another rename just for fun?  Something more specific and less similar to Microsoft's product.

8 Versions Behind & 8 Light Years Ahead.

That could be their slogan.

You do realize that a 'light year' is a measure of distance not time, right?

Why's everyone keen for the next version? So they can rush to pay to upgrade again? I'd be happier if MC stuck with version 12 for a few more years, and just kept rolling out updates / bug fixes.

All I use it for is music anyways so Media Jukebox would probably meet my needs.

i don't disagree about enjoying the free updates and bug fixes... but it is unikey to see any MAJOR functionality changes until MC13 is unveiled. Some people would like to see the TV tuning in Media Center completely reworked and support program guide data, me being at the front of that line. However, I realize it is pretty unliely this is going to be added in any build of MC12 :) I'll just keep my fingers crossed for 13!

Hi Matt,

I agree with you, I would also preffer to wait a few time more for the upgrade, but last time when I made the upgrade from 10 to 11, the version 12 came out 2 months later (Pitty for me) and I'm still on version 11 as there were no option for a free upgrade.

So after my purchase I thought about waiting the version 13, but this lasts already 2 years now and no more upgrades are dont for version 11 since long time ago.

I just wish to avoid again the same situation.
If I can get confirmation that there will ne no new version before one year at least, then I will do the Upgrade, and in another case I will still wait.

Best regards from Belgium.
