Installation Failed: Pluggins. Destination file in use
« on: August 04, 2002, 04:18:03 pm »

I tried to updgade Media Jukebox. I get an error when trying to install the pluggins. I get 'destination file in use' multiple times. I completely deleted everything in the windows/temp folder. Emptied the recycle bin and rebooted the computer. Still get the same error. Any suggestions? I also completely uninstalled MJ before trying to install 8.0.336. I am running Windows ME and have had no problems at all in the past.

THANKS!

Which plug-in do you get the message on?

What browser are you using?

I am using Netscape 7.0 preview edition. Maybe that is the problem. I will try changing my default browser to IE. I hope I don't have to unistall Netscape. I got the error on about 10 plugins.

You won't have to uninstall, but try using IE.

We would love to support the old Netscape, but it's really impossible for us to support all browsers, so we support IE.  For better, or worse, it's the standard.  It's now up to AOL and Opera and others to be compatible.

I'm not happy about this, but it's a reality we have to work with.

How do I change my browser? I thought I changed the default browser, but, I got the same errors. Then, I competely unistalled Netscape and tried again with the same results. The temp folder is empty. The unistall for netscape 7.0 failed. I also had netscape 4.6 on the computer. The unistall for it went fine. I then deleted every thing 'netscape' related. Not sure how to proceed.

Somehow there is still nestcape stuff on the computer. When I try to use 'favorites' with IE. I get "windows cannot find netscape.exe. this program is needed for opening files of type Internet Shorcut"

I knew I shouldn't have tried out a preview release.

Try opening IE, then go to Tools/Internet Options/Programs and check the box that says "Internet Explorer should check to see if it's the default browser".  Press OK, close IE, Reboot, then bring up IE again.  It should tell you it's not the default browser and ask you if you want it to be.  Say Yes.

I did that. When I opened and closed it, it never asked.

OK. I am almost certain that my problem lies with Netscape 7.0 Preview Release. I put Netscape 4.7 back on and set it as default. This is the setup that worked fine for me in the past. I think Netscape 7 still has some file associations or something that is causing the problems now. I will keep trying.

[rxman's reply moved from another thread]

I have registered MJ8 and have used it for months. I decided to updgrade to the latest and now I can't get it to install. I get 'destination file in use' on about 10 pluggins in a row then it fails.

I did put Netscape 7.0 Preview Release on my computer. However, I made IE my default browser. No luck. I completely removed Netscape 7.0 AND 4.7 including the registry. NO LUCK. I removed Mozilla. NO LUCK. I don't know what else to do. I'm not going to do a new OS install for this program. I also deleted everything from the windows/temp folder.

Is it my browser or is it just the new version of MJ?
Can I still get 8.0.293 (or whatever) ?

Older 8.0 versions aren't available.

Did you try IE?  If it didn't work, what version of IE and exactly what happened?

Are you running as a user with enough permissions to install software?

If you will take time to report exactly what happens you may get better help.

Sorry for the rant.

I am currently running IE 5.50.
No other browser.

I click on install, the InstallWizard opens up.
Installing MJ Program Files. (OK)
Registering MJ Program Files. (OK)
Installing Windows Media Components (NOT OK)
It fails on the 1st pluggin (Installing MP3 Playback Pluggin)
'Failed to install package' 'destination file in use' 'C:\windows\temp\mp3pluggin'

I click ok and the next 8 or 9 pluggins also fail.
Then it finishes and says there are errors (obviously) and I need to reinstall.

What else am I not replying to?
I should have 3 more licenses available if 5 is still the limit.

So you're having trouble when you install the whole program, not when downloading plug-ins from our web page.

> It fails on the 1st pluggin (Installing MP3 Playback Pluggin)
> 'Failed to install package' 'destination file in
> use' 'C:\windows\temp\mp3pluggin'

Are you running as a user with permissions to install?

Did you reboot before trying to install?  Best to uninstall/reboot/close any open applications/reinstall.

Did you try cleaning up the temp internet files folder?  IE/Tools/Internet Options/Temp Internet files / delete files

I am running Windows ME. I install programs all the time. Not sure about permissions. Yes, I am trying to install the whole program, it just fails at the pluggin part. Yes, I uninstalled, rebooted, and attempted to install again. I upgraded to IE 6.0.26 and cleared my temp internet files. Still fails.

It isn't a browser issue.  I thought it was when you said you were installing plug-ins (not the whole program).

Try deleting the whole Program Files/J River/Media Jukebox folder first.  Make sure you have a backup of your license (7.x only) on floppy and that you aren't storing your music there.  You will lose all database entries -- playlists etc.  You'll have to re-import.

I went to try it again. This time when I opened JRiver/Media Jukebox. It would let me delete all files except one. MJShellExt.dll. Maybe this is causing all of my problems?

Nevermind. After running Add/Remove programs, it let me delete it. Didn't make any difference.

SUCCESS!!!

I finally got it to work. I completed deleted all of the J River stuff. Then I used an option that lets me 'roll back' the registry in Windows ME. It finally installed! It seemed like a wild goose chase there for awhile, but, I finally got it. Now I have to rebuild my playlists. :(

On a side note, I installed the plugin for both my Rio 800 and my wife's Nomad IIc and both worked great!!

I am back in love.
