[Usage Reporting Info] - ?
« on: April 11, 2008, 02:09:36 am »

I've been fighting with my PC this past week and a bit... always bad times!

After accepting a couple of driver updates followed by SP1, I found Windows Vista impossible to live with, so after wrestling with it for a bit, I decided I was far too old for all that carry on and decided to roll back to XP.

I got some way into the task and discovered a load of "Data loss is imminent" S.M.A.R.T errors in my system logs. One of my new 500 gig Seagate drives was on it's way out.
I was able to clone the drive (thank you Acronis) and after taking almost 3 days to securely wipe all my personal info off the drive, it's now on its way back to Seagate under warranty.

So, my attention now returns to a freshly installed copy of MC...

What is the purpose of this default "Usage Reporting info" library field:

Just a guess, but I wonder if it's being used for the new Recommendations system?

This is the field that is scanned by the recommendation engine to decide if it needs to upload new song usage info to the JRiver server. It's value is either empty or "1". It's set to "1" when the usage (playcount/skipcount) changes, and cleared after an upload to the server. It's not utilized unless the user has opted-in to the recommendation system (Options/General/Submit song ratings...).

I had a feeling it might be something along those lines too but felt that the question needed asking.

John, thank you for the straight-forward explanation.
