Anyone else out there using unRAID to store their media for MC? My server is now up to 4.5 TB for storage plus 750 Gb for parity. With 1 TB drive prices under $200 now, I may put in a 1 TB parity in the near future.

This thread is for sharing your experiences, concerns etc. about the MC/unRAID coupling.

It's software that allows you to build a cheap NAS alternative server, with up to 16 drives. You can use IDE/SATA in any combo, expand your array at any time and has parity protection too. You can lose a single drive and unRAID can build the data on the fly i.e. you can watch a DVD that was stored on the missing drive. If you lose a second drive, you will lose only the data on the two drives, not the whole array like in RAID5.

Yes, that's right. Well, it's right up to 16 disks of various capacities.

My server was built in January and has been running smoothly ever since. The only down time has been to expand it further or to save power at nights when I know it won't be accessed. It was the easiest thing to set up as well, which was the most pleasant surprise.

None that I'm aware of. Each Share has the remainder of the total free server capacity listed as available. Of course, you can limit shares to only certain disks if you want, and in that case, you're limited by the space left on the disk.

No, not yet. I am using the 4.3.6 beta w/o any problems, but I haven't started using the cache.

Thanks. I have to update from 4.2.1 some time soon. I assume the upgrade process is as painless as setting up the first time? I use a cache disk of sorts now in the form of another NAS. Anything destined for the server e.g. my DVDs are ripped to this first and then transferred over for proper importing and tagging. Having the cache disk as part of the server would be great, faster, more efficient.... but might also increase the power consumption a little too.

just thought I'd add that my server has been going strong for over a year now. I've upgraded the version of unRAID once, and am considering doing so again. It works so smoothly with MC13 as well.

1TB drives are $70 this week.
2TB drives are $119.
If I wasn't needing all my spare cash for a vacation/fishing trip in 2 weeks I'd snatch up a couple.
