For example, I use MC to organize my dvds. To be able to do that, I download jpg cover arts for each dvd and store the information in their tags, which is not very easy. Instead, I should just say "insert" and insert a new record about the dvd. Similarly, I use MC to maintain citations. To be able to do that, I download pdf articles. Handling citations to articles that I don't have is difficult, so I use Endnote instead.

It sounds like you want to create a template for media that MC could use with new media. You would define what tags you wanted in this and then as you import files just say its of this or that type and they would magically inherit all the tags in the pre-defined template.

Something that puts the JRiver database organizational spin on the EverNote or Microsoft OneNote style application.  That gets you in the "organize your thoughts" space.  Tags for note style documents.  Tags for sections of a document or file.  A way to make sense out of multiple recipe files.  A way to keep track of neat programming tricks and algorithms you come across.  Something that can take a directory full of related files (like files related to a large group project) and make sense of them, group them in various ways (authors, timeline, subject, TODO, etc.).

I think this video should be taken with a lot of precaution because it can be a fake.
But I found it interesting as it seems that Microsoft decided to improve their explorer by adding multiple pane, tabs...

Maybe it should be taken in account if MC wants to become a windows explorer replacement.

I dont think JR should be aiming for the "File Manager" space, but instead (if file management is an area of potential) aim for a "File Management System" (best description I can think of right now).

There are lots of "file managers" out there and, as pointed out, you'll always be competing against those who have a direct interest in that space. There is not too many "File Management Systems" out there though. Sure, there are DMS's out there, but they're not really aimed at the home user, and generally speaking, really do only cater for documents.

Ideally, I'd love to see an application that can apply some organisational intelligence across a wide range of file types (docs, music, video, books, wine reviews, software installers, recipes, etc etc). Optimally, the application would be able to provide access to said files both from and to distributed locations and across multiple platforms.

What I've always wanted is an app that can seamlessly integrate files stored across all our PCs into a single coherent navigation system that can also be accessed remotely. To clear it up a bit, imagine an MC-style app that can take a library stored on my machine, join it with a library on my wifes machine, as well as the master server library, and present said libraries in a single virtual library. These libraries that I speak of should also not be limited to music, imgaes and video.. oh no! I should be able to find our tax returns where ever I've lost them, the wife should be able to access her recipes, stored on her PC, from a lappy in the kitchen, while listening to music from the server, with some recent photos I took (that are stored on my PC) playing as a desktop background wallpaper - all from the one management system. And a nice web front end would be good too (local server, and remote PHP based too)

Plugins would be a must for integrated file display (ie pdf) as well as for reading meta info from particular file types.

I'm sure this is all pie-in-the-sky hopes for the next few years but really, its just a selection of what I think a File Management System should be able to do (further features include, but are not limited to.. replication, backups, archival, ....). If you want more suggestions along these lines just let me know, I'll happily oblige you

I think we should not view MC12 as a file manager as we are dealing most of the time with tags. File managers deal with directory hierarchies and file naming conventions which both are not the main target of MC.

I would prefer to call it a "Media Organizer" or "Information Organizer" or "Media Store" or "Info Store". As such I share confishy's view that many more items could be tagged and organized. I just tried whether I could organize and tag all the installable software packages I have in a software repository. Bad luck, zip files are not imported right now, although exe files are.

I would also go along the line of container (projects etc.) management. Many items (also music albums, videos) are more kind of a set of different files (audio, images, video, documents, podcasts) to be managed as a single entity. Example: From my last holiday I have pictures, video clips, audio records and some written documents that I would like to store under one single entity such as "Spring Holiday 2008". Managing all those different items in a elegant and easy way would be a great plus!

MC12 should free itself from the tight belt of the audio - image - video trilogy and organize media and information in a much broader and generalized way. A few things that I think I would like to organize with MC12: documents, bookmarks, audio records, software packages, notes, ideas, external media, devices (security web cams), home automation etc.

This seems so obvious wonder why its not possible, what if it only worked in readonly mode.

Before MC expands, how about getting DVB-S support running? I don't know how it is in the US, but in Europe, digital satellite reception is becoming more and more essential for a Media Center app - and the competition software isn't strong. I have tried several MC apps (had to for DVB-S) and they all fall down massively on the interface or bugs. None of them come close to MC as all-round media apps.

The first request for DVB-S support on this forum was in 2003. The last feedback was "maybe in v.13" :-(

I reckon MC does a lot already and does most of it extremely well - but shouldn't the existing palette be completed before trying to throw in bells and whistles? After all, why do people buy a media centre app?

I'm sure MC could do a good job of this, and limiting to images ought to be enough to keep the lawyers at bay!!
