flac to mp3 conversion to iPod
« on: May 08, 2008, 03:44:51 am »

I have a problem with the conversion of flac files to my iPod Classic (4G) for some days (the builds that were out for the public about the 23th of April).
My iPod doesn't play these songs anymore. The titles are shown for a short time but then it jumps to the next file.

By looking to the converted files with the explorer I've noticed, that in the HH Cache the files are correctly converted. On the iPod the files have the same size as in the HH Cache but they have the ending .flac

I'm using MC 12.0.492.

What are your conversion and conversion cache settings for your iPod?

My conversion settings are:
- Simultaneous Conversions: 1
- Mode: convert unsupported formats
- Encoder: mp3-Encoder
- Cover art: remove from tag (tried it before with: no change)

My conversion cache settings:
- Cache converted file: yes
- a stack location is set to a folder on the same harddrive
- Cache directory rule: [Artist]\[Album]

You may have some bad cached info...

Let's try removing a small subset of cached files and re-transferring. Please follow these steps:

1) Pick one album or one small playlist to test (make sure the files are FLAC).
2) In MC. select a view that only lists the test files.
3) Select all the files, right-click and select "Stacks > Expand Stacks".
4) Add the "Stack Tag" column to the view (right-click on the list header, select Columns, select "Stack Tag")
5) Delete all the files that have a stack tag of HH Conversion.
6) Now retransfer these tracks to the iPod...

Are you using CUE files?

OK, I did all the steps, but my problem still exists. I'm using single flac files, no CUEs.

I've noticed one more thing: When I put the files from the cache per drag & drop into playing now and start playing, I get an error mesage: "Media Center encountered errors while trying to play the last several files. Please make sure that the path in your media library points to the right location."
In the colum "File Type" the file is signed as flac. When I update library from tags, the Colum "File Type" changes to mp3 and now it's possible to play the file.
I've tested the songs in the cache also with an other player; they are ok.

I tried some more things:
1) When I transfer the playlist to my smartphone everything is fine. The files are correctly converted to mp3 and I#M able to play them on the phone.

2) When I expand the stacks and put the stacked files (mp3) to the playlist which I want to sync instead of the original files (flac) I can play them on my iPod too. So I think the files are converted correct.

I will go on a holiday tomorrow and will be back next Tuesday. So long...

So when you re-transfer the file - ..\OriginalFolder\File1.flac, it converts it to an mp3 named ..\CachedFiles\File1.flac, and transfers that file to the iPod?

What is an example of one of the original file names?

Can you send me (rick at jriver dot com) one of the files for testing?

When you get time, please turn off all syncing rules for your iPod, turn on logging to a file, reset the current log file, drag one flac file to the iPod, wait for it to complete and then email me the logs.

Thanks,
Rick

The original file ..\Original Folder\file1.flac is converted to ..\CachedFiles\File1.mp3, but in MC it is shown as flac in the column "File Type" (with a bitrate of 128). The transferd file on the iPod has the filename ..\music\F10\JIDF.flac, but the filesize is exactly the same as the file in the CachedFiles (the mp3 file).

An example for an original filename is  I:\1. Musik - Sammlung SB\Bruce Springsteen\Bruce Springsteen - Magic - Radio Nowhere.flac

I'll mail you a file, the log file and a screenshot in a few minutes.

Seems that something was broken in my library. I've created a new one yesterday, imported all files and now it works again.  :)
