Streaming of 128k mp3s from shoutcast skips and pops
« on: June 17, 2008, 05:25:42 am »

Hi all,

Just installed and registered the full version of Media Center in order to sync with my Creative Zen.

I wanted to listen to some shoutcast streams via media center however they just keep on skipping and poping every 4 seconds or so. It make listening to them unbearable.

I've tried installing Media Center on a different pc -> express install and still no luck. I am using the latest version available from this forum.

What can be wrong with Media Center?

Welcome to Interact.

Do you hear the pops on the PC or the Zen?

What type of file?  MP3?  Bitrate?

Try changing playback from Direct Sound to Wave Out or vice versa.  In MC Options.

Try the "Weird Problems" thread in my signature for similar problems and solutions.

The pops are heard on the PC.

The Streams are mp3 @ 128kbps. The link to the streams that I have tried are:

http://abc.net.au/streaming/triplej/triplej.m3u
http://www.abc.net.au/streaming/classic/classicfm.m3u
http://www.iinet.net.au/my/media/playlists/triplej.m3u
http://www.3fl.net.au/radio/streams/skyfm-guitar.m3u

I have already tried switching between DirectSound, Waveout and ASIO. This did not help I heard the pops and clicks for all them.

When I connect to these stream using either winamp, another program, or windows media player the streams all play fine.

On other thing that I also tried is setting the Secondary Buffer Minimum MS to more then 6 seconds, by altering the registry key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Center 12\Player Core\Secondary Buffer Minimum MS

Whilst I noticed that more data was buffered, it still did not solve the issue.

Is there any trace / debug functionality that I can turn on that may help solve this issue?

On other thing I forgot to mention. I also downloaded and tried out version 11 of JRiver Media Center and it still had the same issue.

We're able to reproduce it on some machines (but not all).  It's likely an icy metadata parsing issue.

We'll post more as we learn more.

Good to hear that it is not just me.

This will be fixed in a version of the player that will be available on this forum in about a week.

A core Windows Internet function behaves differently on different machines (all with XP), which made this tricky to track down.

Any ideas why the "core Windows Internet" function does this? Is it related to what is installed on the machine? XP service Pack number, etc?

It's not only XP, it's also W2K. I've posted it before.
