CD Ripping under 336
« on: July 30, 2002, 06:22:15 pm »

Hello all,

I seem to be having a problem now ripping CDs. Any CD I try to rip from my library comes up with "Failed to read sector. Sector 0: Incorrect Function. Would you like to keep trying further tracks?"

If you say yes, it will blow up on the first sector of the next track, the track after, etc. I have been able to rip tracks just fine in the past with previous versions (not sure of build numbers though, sorry.)

I have a TDK 40/12/48x drive with the latest firmware rev. (t01) on Win2k system. Athlon 1.2/ASUS A7V mobo w/ onboard controllers (PROMIS ATA100 and standard IDE channels). CD is running off standard channel in DMA mode as primary master, with a ZIP100 in PIO mode as primary slave. I have the latest VIA 4in1 drivers as well.

It appears like its a copy protection scheme; however, these are older CD's in my library that I have ripped in the past. Not sure what's up. Any ideas guys?

I just downloaded the software yesterday and a new user to the software.  I am getting the exact same message when ripping but am using different hardware.  The drives are Pioneer DVR-104 DVD Writer, HP 100i DVD|PLS|RW Writer, and a Zip 250 USB writer.  I am loading all three drives with CD's and letting them rip one after the other.  When this error occurs, I just close the program and swap the CD's around into a different drive and then try to rip again.  It almost always works.  However, using AudioGrabber , WinAmp or WMP8, the problem doesn't manifest itself so it is definitely not a CD / Drive problem and a probably a software bug.

One other thing I noticed is that with three drives loaded, one often does not resolve the info from the CDDB.  I have to click on the drive and manually ask it to reconnect to the CDDB for the info. With one disc loaded it is usually OK.  I tried to adjust the CDDB timeout but it made no difference.

Other than that I am enjoying the software and plan on registering it soon.  Lots of really cool features.

Check the drive "type" field in Devices Settings and see if it's set to IDE (unless you have SCSI cd drives).

Odd...

It was set to IDE, so I switched it to Auto Config. Upon my next rip it set itself back to IDE and bombed out again. I then manually set it to ASPI and it worked fine... Give that a shot David.

Thanks for the insight John =)

I checked the setting for each of the drives.  The two DVD drives were set to IDE and the USB drive to ASPI.  I chanded them to auto and then to aspi and also at IDE.  Didn't seem to make any difference.

Is it still possible to dowload the previous version so that I can get my ripping completed.  I still have hundreds of CD's to go through.

David,
Please post your system info by copying it from MJ Help and pasting here.

It's late in the day, so it will be tomorrow morning before you hear anything.

Here's a little bit more information on the Ripping problem...

The following error occurs only when ripping CD's on the HP DVD 100i DVD writer.  "Failed to read sector. Sector 0: Incorrect Function. Would you like to keep trying further tracks?"  It doesn't show up on the Pioneer DVD-R writer on the Zip 650 USB CD writer.  Although I would like to resolve that error, I can live with ripping from the other two drives for the time being.

The other problem (more anoying) is that MJ almost always hangs when ripping is finished and I put in the next set of CD's.  I have ensured that I click on the "OK" dialog box and let it attempt to grab the album art before I swap disks.  When I close the drives and MJ calls the CDDB to resolve the new CD's it will 9 times out of 10 hang or spit out an error.  I'll post the exact error later.  I usually have to close down MJ and restart it.  Often it will hang again when contacting the CDDB the second time too.  I have a cable modem so it should always be accessable.

Thanks,
David

Try one drive at a time.

One drive at a Time works fine.  The problem started when I realized that I could load up all the drives and rip several CD's in succession.

On the occasions when MJ hangs it usually doesn't produce an error.  When an error is displayed, here's what I get:

Microsoft Visual C|PLS||PLS|
Runtime Error!
Program C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\Media Jukebox.exe
abnormal program termination

I am willing to help with troubleshooting this issue.  Please let me know any steps that you want me to try out.

I have 336 and I can rip without the errors you mention.  However, as I wrote in a different post, using DigitalSecure ripping kills my dsl connection badly.

But 336 now lets me rip 99 minute cdr's, the older version wouldn't.  That was cool, I mentioned it in a previous post and they fixed it!
