Similar Artists
« on: June 28, 2008, 07:01:01 pm »

In the new Performer MC that we're building, we have a Similar Artists link.  The information comes from AMG/AllMusic Guide.

It's made me wonder how this could be done from within MC.  It would be nice to hear what you think.

It isn't always obvious.

For example, I started with Janis Joplin tonight.  You might expect Jerry Garcia, but would you expect Jorma Kaukonen?  He was a band member.  When I followed the link to him, I found a nice finger picking style that reminds me of Doc Watson, Mike Seeger, and ....?

Free association?  Band members?  Kharma?

I think of artists with similar styles, usually within the same time period.

Then there is the connection of artists that were influenced by one or the other.  Here http://www.liveplasma.com/
you can see they show which artists had the greatest influence over others.

Was thinking the same thing recently, but it requires the user to do the linking, for the cases where AMG never heard of the genre or artist ;).

Implementaion wise, could make them nestable.

Janis Joplin/Jerry Garcia/someone else
Janis Joplin/another derivative
Janis Joplin/ Yet another derivative

That alone, takes care of 1:(0-many) or everything.

This info could even be used by Radio for better associations.

Have to say this will only work on a very broad level, as artists rarely like to stay in the same vein for extended periods, preferring to straddle genres/styles frequently and confound the trainspotters :D

I agree with this statement. I would put it similar to what Yahoo Music does.

Yes Yahoo makes the best job for this.
