can't play tunes - system setting?

None of my MP3 players works right - MJ, Winamp, WMP, Liquid Audio. What happens is, after a few seconds, the sound and track counter stop, but disk access seems to continue. I figure it's some kind of sytem-wide setting, but I have no idea what to adjust or how.
