tags don't get updated in M4A files
(1/1)
jens:
Win XP + MC 12.0.529 (and before)
Repro
1. In MC, change the Genre tag on an M4A file (or the Album tag, or any other tag)
2. In MC, select Library Tools/Update Tags (from library)
3. In MC, select Library Tools/Update Library (from tags)
RESULT: Genre is reverted back to original value before the change
YES, I do have all needed options checked, and when I do the above for an MP3 or WMA file, it works as expected and the tags stick.
YES, I have write access to the file, because when I tag the same M4A file using iTunes, the changes stick.
This happens for all M4A files, all the time. Any ideas?
Matt:
Media Center does not write M4A tags.
jens:
Ugh?! Why not? Can that be changed???
I really want to use MC as my one and only library and editor, and I do have a mix of WMA, MP3 and M4A files. It's transparent which file type I'm using in MC, except when it comes to tagging.
JimH:
You can still use M4A and the library will remember. It's just that the info isn't stored in the file itself.
There are some formats that are less "open" than others. Here's more on MC's M4A support from our wiki.

Digging up this thread to give my view on this...
1) EasyTag (for Linux) as well as Amarok can write m4a tags, so why shouldn't MC/MJ be able to do it as well?
2) If MC/MJ is unable to write the tag changes to the file and only stores them in the library, it should warn the user about it. I was surprised to see some of my tracks having a different genre etc. when I loaded them into mpd on linux.
Oh and while I'm here: MJ runs great under latest wine. This is the first time I don't have any crashes :)
