Gidday Matt - Thanks very much for your replies on my previous thread about Normailizatione etc.  That threads a bit dead now & as I haven't heard from you I thought it best to start this new message.

Back to that whole thing of using Replay Gain to level out the volume on all the tracks prior to making a compilation type CD.

My music files are a mix of APE, MP3 & sometimes WAV ... For this
particular compilation CD they were APE. Now I may be a bit of a dummy, but I tried to do as you described in that previous post. It was a labourious exercise & at the end of it all I couldn't hear any change. The same tracks were still louder etc.

What setting should I have applied to the Replay Gain?

Do I have to do it for every song or is there some way of having one blanket setting to cover the entire proposed track listing for the compilation CD?

When you say for step one to "analyze the replay gain of the files you want to burn" what does this achieve ... Maybe I did it wrong but they all appeared to be the same. But that shouldn't have been the case should it, so maybe I didn't do that right either.

As to my other post re:making this whole process simpler (& if possible via a one button action). The question still stands ... "Is it (or will it be) possible to make this whole volume levelling process way more simpler (& fool proof) than it is at the moment"? Because surely this is one of the things that many, many people will want to do with MJ = Make Compilations & they'll all want the songs to be at the same volume level.

Kindest regards - Rusty.

G'day Rusty,

does this mean you are another Aussie?  I've just been mucking about with replay gain this morning.  I wasn't able to find the information in the help file but finally found the Analyse Replay Gain option under the Tools menu in the Media File Properties dialogue.  It's a slo-o-o-ow process.  To make matters worse, it's modal so you can't do ANYTHING with MJ while it's running (any chance of a fix?).  So, either do it overnight or set up a nice long playlist to play while it's running.  The process doesn't seem to disrupt playback.

Once your files have been analysed, each one is tagged with a Replay Gain value.  This is used to attenuate each track during playback if Replay Gain is enabled in the DSP.

Hope this helps.

Howdy Vlad - Yep I'm an Ozzy ... the old Gidday, sure is a give away!

Pity about this whole Replay Gain thing. In a great program like MJ I really didn't expect something as commonly required as this to be so difficult. I wouldn't mind betting that a great many of the CD's people are burning with MJ are Compilations composed of tunes with various volume levels & you'd have to wonder why a simpler volume levelling prior to burning solution wasn't on the agenda a long, long time ago.

Thanks for your tip about the MP3 volume levelling software & I'll download it but, my MJ Library is composed of a mixture of MP3's, APE & some WAV.  In the case of the particular CD I was preparing, they were all APE files & your suggested software wouldn't have been able to help there.

Maybe I'll just have to become a squeeky wheel & see if the boffin's at MJ can't come up with something which can only even further towards making the MJ the best music file manager there is.

Ultimately what we all want is to be able to right click on a Playlist etc & be able to find a button within that pop up menu that says "VOLUME LEVEL PLAYLIST" or similar.

Rusty,

There is a simple reason why ape files playback at different levels. They do not support ID3.2 tags. Replay Gain needs this type of tag support to work. Go to the website and see for yourself. You can get there from the 'file properties > tools > Replay Gain' in MJ. Click on the visit website.

G'day Rusty,

I think that you've misunderstood my post.  There is no extra software to download.  MJ does it via the function that I described.  I have just finished analysing all my contemporary tracks (2443 of them) over the last 24 hours.  Now that they are all analysed and tagged, I'm using Replay Gain and it works just fine.

MachineHead,

you are right about APE files not supporting ID3.2 tags.  But, they do support APE tags and MJ have added their own MJ Metadata.  All my files are APE and I can assure you that the Replay Gain has been added to each one and is being used by MJ.
