iPod "Device info cannot be retrieved"
« on: July 30, 2008, 08:22:53 am »

Hello all

I have a big problem with my iPod Video.

Everytime when i connect it to the PC and start MC it tells me
"Device info cannot be retrieved" "Please reboot your PC and retry"

I do reboots and reconnect many times with no success.
But sometimes it works. I cant find a scheme why.
When MC found my iPod it works fine. But it works only after xx reboots or reconnects.

iTunes found the iPod everytime also Winamp.
The iPod is set in iTunes for manual and the iTunes autostart is off.

MC works over years fine with this iPod. The only was changes on the PC
are the Vista updates.

The MC "Info" is WITH the iPod.

I hope anyone have a Tip for me.

Uwe

sorry for my bad english  ;)

I forget the exact version number this bug was introduced.  However it was the side-effect of fixing the cover art issue with the ipod.  I get this error every now and then and I have not determined the pattern.  It seems mostly to happen on the first connection after starting MC.  All I have to do to fix it is disconnect the ipod while MC is running and reconnect it and I am fine.

When you disconnect the ipod you are telling Windows to eject the ipod, not just unplugging it right?

i try both...

unplug via windows or simple disconnect. the result is everytime the same...
MC didn´t found my iPod.

any other software like itunes or the trial from mediamonkey found it.. also winamp.

I'm also getting this problem, on an 8Gb Nano 2nd Gen - just when I thought I could trash iTunes!

Should I stick with it, and wait for a fix?

JRiver - You do know this bug still exists right.  While I have a work around for it, it still is very annoying.

In MC, under Drives and Devices, right click on the device and choose update firmware.

Have used Media Center for years and never a problem..until now...
Same issue with 60 GB Ipod video.  Tried all of the work arounds listed above.  Detection is very hit or miss (usually miss)MC did eventually recognize Ipod as a new device. Tried "updating firmware" fix suggested even though Ipod firmware already up to date.  Ejected device.  Same issue.  Still telling me that "device info cannot be retrieved"

Agreed.  I still haven't found a consistent work around.
Any way to download an earlier version of program until this issue is addressed / resolved?

In MC, under Drives and Devices, right click on the device and choose update firmware.

My Ipod is a 160GB Classic, thought MC could not update it.  Besides the fact that I have the latest firmware.

A few things to try:

1) Make sure you have administrator priveleges (i.e. try running as admin if you're using Vista + UAC)
2) Kill iTunes services like iTunesHelper.exe, iPodService.exe, AppleMobileDeviceService.exe, etc.

1- Running XP Pro with admin priv.
2- Never installed itunes on this machine.

Matt - Note this problem starting happening with the coverart fix for the ipod.  I thought you or another dev even said then that a temp. side effect of the fix was this problem, course I could be remember that incorrectly and too lazy to go searching for it.

We try to ask the iPod for information with low-level hardware commands.  It should work.

If it fails, we used to fall back to hard-coded tables.  The hard-coded tables were out-of-date (in some cases) and caused problems.  We decided to scrap that method.

Could you send a log to matt at jriver dot com that shows the iPod getting plugged in and failing to be loaded?

Thanks for the help.

Thanks to UwB for the logs.  It was just what we needed to get it fixed.

The iPod returns information in little packets.  On some systems, it puts random junk at the end of the packet, probably depending on the state of system memory.  We were assuming it would zero out unused portions, but this obviously wasn't always right.

Look for an updated build soon.

Sweet - It does not happen to me all that often, maybe once every other day and I never could see a pattern of what would cause it.  Glad to see you found it.

If you're interested, the fix is in the Media Center 13 build that is available now to registered forum users.
