sound playing too fast

No matter what I do I can't get the sound to play at normal
speed on my XP machine.

There is no bios, and all other prefrences are correct as I see them.
I have reinstalled drivers.

Any advice. My sound plays at least 3 times faster than it is supposed to.

It could be the alvin.vrs virus.

What are you trying to play?  MP3, CD?  Where did the files come from?

Have you tried other files?
