iPhone woes
« on: November 28, 2008, 01:53:59 am »

I use MC12 for all my music. I got a new iPhone 3G. I hate HATE iTunes. Is there any way I can use MC to put music on my iPhone?

I tried importing my music into iTunes just so I could get it on my phone. Fine, but no ratings. Apparently iTunes uses an internal database for ratings and ignores the ID3 tag that MC uses. Blah. I found an AppleScript called Rating Writer that exports iTunes ratings to and from the comments field. This allows me to use a work flow like this:

* In MC, select all songs, set comments field to "=My Rating: [Rating]".
* In iTunes, delete all songs (this takes forever).
* In iTunes, import all songs (this takes even longer).

Now I can put files on my iPhone based on the ratings.  :-\ This is just too inconvenient.

Also, what happens when I rate songs on the iPhone and I want to get those ratings back to MC?

Is there a better solution for this?

Hi,

Instead of deleting and importing your music in Itunes, try selecting all songs, right click, get info.
Then do not change anything and just click ok. This will make Itunes update its library from your file tags.

When you rate a song on your iPhone, and getting that back in MC is a bit more difficult:

- in Itunes, sort your songs by rating
- select all songs with 1 start rating, right click, get info, in comments field: fill 1 for 1 star rating, click ok. Do the same for your other ratings. You can also make this step easier by making smartlist for each rating.
- in MC, update your library (run auto import)
- in MC, select all songs, right click, library tools, move/copy fiels, source=comment;destination=rating

Now your MC songs should have the similar ratings as in Itunes.

Before you try, make a backup of your library in case anything goes wrong.

Cheers
