Just bought MC13, Slow response time
« on: November 28, 2008, 11:42:40 am »

I upgraded from MC12, which I have been happily using for years.  The response time of MC13 is 10% that of MC12.

Is anyone else experiencing this?  I have nothing else running, because nothing else will run at the same time as MC13.

Please help, please explain.

Turn off cover art lookup, thumbnailing, and audio analysis.

Cover art is OFF (i do my own cover art)

Thumbnails are done in advance (so i don't think it shouldn't be a problem)

Audio analysis is OFF (i do replaygain in advance on all my mp3's)

I should say that I am not an unhappy customer, I would not use use anything other than MC because of what it offers and the control it allows

In my experience MC13 is faster than MC12. There must be a reason for the slowliness you are experiencing.

Could you explain how exactly MC13 is slow? Is everything slow or does the problem show up only in certain areas?

What kind of media files do you have and how many of them? Are the files on a local drive or are you accessing them through network? If you use a LAN connection, how fast is it?

Quote

This is not possible. You can't import MC12 thumbnails to MC13. The storage system is different and in any case the library restore/conversion would reset the old thumbnails.
(EDIT: naturally this does not apply if you mean the manually started "build thumbnails" process by "done in advance".)

Thumbnails are small cached copies of cover art. If you have video files without separate cover art MC creates thumbnails on the fly by running a bit of each video and taking a screengrab. Depending on your files and file locations this may take more or less time. AFAIK, thumbnailing is a low priority background process, but MC cannot fully control the external OS level video decoders and other DS filters.

BTW, did you let MC13 use an existing library (or restore an MC12 library backup file) or did you import your media files to an empty library?

Yes, I did the build thumbnails option.

This was after choosing the option to import my existing MC12 library.

Maybe, the build thumbnails was still running in the bacground?  It seems to have improved, but clicking the "Audio" button takes about 10 seconds to get teh cover art album list.  Is that normal?

Some functions like changing the volume level have delayed reaction but not all the time.  Customize View has long lags between changes such as order of categories.

Is there anything else I should look at?

Thanks.

I have the same "problems". Cover art lookout is off, thumbnails are done, audio analysis is off.

In comparison to MC 12 I wait and wait...
At least 10 seconds to get the album or artist list. Genre is just 2 or 3 seconds.

Around 120'000 files, most of them mp3, some flac, no videos or else. Library backup is 9.5 MB.

So the question again from my side:
Is there anything else we should look at?

Thanks

Turn on logging in MC and see if you can find out more.  It may be having trouble with a file or a subset of files.

Make sure you're using the latest build of MC13.

Are the views standard views?

Logging is on, let's see.

Build is 13.0.95.

All standard views.

Thanks and have break over these days!

I had this same problem after upgrading and fixed it by setting all of my views to the default. (View -> Add View ->Reset All views to library default.

Before you do that, please see if you can tell us what views you have that might have been customized in MC12.

I've been using MC12 for a about 2 years now and loved the functionality as well as it's speed!

I just upgraded to MC 13.0.100 and have noticed a sharp decrease in response time in various instances. For example, after right-clicking a song and selecting "Play" everything freezes for about 10-15 seconds before I can continue clicking around in MC.

If I double click on a song in Windows Explorer, it also takes about 10 seconds before it starts playing and another 10 seconds before I can click around in MC.

The 3D cover art view also crashes after using it a while - I can narrow down what exactly causes it to crash.

I still have MC12 installed and associated all media files with MC13.

Any suggestions are welcome as I'd hate to revert back to MC12.

Thanks.

Sorry, I actually upgraded to MC 13.0.101, and not MC 13.0.100 as I mention above.

Please try updating your video driver.

This is also worth a try.

I had this same problem after upgrading and fixed it by setting all of my views to the default. (View -> Add View ->Reset All views to library default.

I am also seeing much slower view scheme response on MC 13 than on MC12.  The following logging is just from switching from the default Artist view to the default Album view.  I have a very large library (1645 GB, 116,000 tracks), but it performs much better on MC12.

I think an extra sort of each album got snuck into Album thumbnail type views.  It's fast enough that it's only a problem when you have a _lot_ of albums, which you do.

Please try build 102 (or later) once it's available and let us know if it helps.

Other views like Artists, Panes, Genres, etc. should not have this problem.

Thanks.

I will try as soon as it is available - Thanks!  (Indeed, viewing by album thumbnail is how I do most of my browsing).

(I realize it may be alot to ask for lightning fast performance with that many album thumbnails - but you guys have blown me away with how well it works).

Jim,

Good news! I figured out the reason for the slow response.

Even after resetting the views to default as you suggest above, I was still having a painfully slow response:

1) When playing a song, MC essentially freezed for about 10 seconds (even thought the song started playing within about 1-2secs
2) When stopping the playback of a song, everything froze for about 10 secs as well.

I display cover art, song info, and a small area for the Planetarium - Fireball standard visualisation. When I turned off the visualisation but kept everything else the same, the speed returned to satisfactory (instant) speed as I was used to in MC12.

I will try search for an updated video driver as I guess MC13 uses more updated drivers/functions than MC12?

Cheers
