Sorting by artist
« on: January 11, 2009, 12:13:36 pm »

Currently, my albums are showing in alphabetical order by artist first name.  I want Tim McGraw to show up with the Ms.  How can I do this?  Sounds simple, but I can't find it for the life of me.  Of course, I just installed last night.

Any thoughts on this one? I thought this would be my easy question...   ;)

Can't be done quickly... sorting is done on the field contents without context awareness, so Tim McGraw is simply a string of text and MC doesn't know it's a person rather than a band...

You would either have to rename all your artists by Surname, Name convention so that the sort works or use different fields, ie set up your own field, eg Artist Sort, and copy all the Artist fields over then edit all the people to surname, name format and sort on that field instead.  That way you have two fields, the original and your own user field.

Alternatively you just get used to alphabetical sorting regardless of whether the artist is a person or a group.

Do you store the album's music files in folders?
If so, what folder name?
x:\Tim McGraw\Album Name\
-or-
x:\McGraw Tim\Album Name\
?

If your folders reflect the same naming/sorting conventions you wish to use in MC you could simply use the folder name to either list-sort or perhaps to fill in the tags that mark_h sugested rather than filling htem manually. Use right-click --> Fill Properties from Filename

Personally, if I had a Tim McGraw album, you'd find it under T in my library.

Yes, I name my folders like "McGraw, Tim" so that option might work great.  Thanks.

Sorry, where exactly do I do those if I want to sort by folder?  I'm new at this, and haven't quite figured out how to navigate this beast...

on MC's upper toolbar click on TOOLS ->> OPTIONS
then select Library & Folders, click on Manage Library Fields
select Add New Field on the lower left and define your new field.

Once this is done, you can select your files and right-click, then select Fill Properties From Filename which can fill in your tag fields from the file and folder names. Test on a couple before doing them all.

Wow, that's great.  That's exactly what I needed.  Now, any idea why this isn't applying to the 3D view list of CDs?  Al Green's still sorting by Al.
