...wehn I browse MJ message board (here).  How can I turn it off w/o installing the silly player.

Frankly I don't like macromedia. Much like microsoft though they enticed enough sites to use there technology that I end up getting sprayed with requests to install their software all day long. I hate it.

I agree that Flash is far too often (mis)used for annoying ads and intro screens, but that doesn't mean the technology is junk. It's actually quite a powerful animation and scripting system. Not to plug my own stuff, but I've created a slick-looking (IMHO:) remote front end for Media Jukebox that's done entirely with Flash.  It doesn't have annoying animations: it's nice and simple. As with any tool, it's what you do with it that matters.

Pay close attention to the installation instructions.  You have to move a dll by hand and a couple other things.
