Mobile carrier over there

Hi!
My son is fortunate enough to have been accepted as an exchange student. He will spend his year in Maryland starting in august. As the world is today he will probably not survive without a mobile phone. Well actually he has a phone but the question is which operator should we choose. I have no clue what operators there are to choose from (in Maryland) as I'm from Finland. Therefore I turn to You. I'll need help to select a carrier that has affordable calls and has a good coverage (mainly) in MD. Any help is greatly appreciated.
