Maximized Media Center on top of Windows taskbar (Vista)
« on: April 26, 2009, 03:27:01 am »

Hi,

I have my Windows taskbar set to auto-hide.

When I have Media Center (13.0.132) maximized, it does not allow the Windows task bar to appear when I drag the mouse point to the border of the screen. It is like Media Center sits on top of all Windows not respecting the settings for the taskbar ("Keep the taskbar on top of other windows").

This seems to be a UI bug and I think it has been there since release 11.
Is it possible to resolve?

Regards,
/Johan

I don't have that problem here I've always auto hide taskbar on and it shows up no problem, except Theater View which is a full screen interface.
Do you have any task bar extension software installed?

Hi,

Nope, no extras installed. The task bar simply will not appear above Media Center. It does appear above all other applications, though.

Have you seen the issue on multiple machines or just one?

Hi,

Ouch. I ran into the classical "support call" procedure.....

Yes, I have seen it on other installations. Maybe we should blame Microsoft for allowing us to dock the taskbar also to the top, left, or right and not only to the bottom of the screen.  8)

It works fine if you dock the taskbar to the left, top or bottom. But if you dock it to the right - that's where I have docked it - Media Center stays above.

Cannot tell if this is Microsoft's fault or J River's....

And I am sorry that I am such a unique user that I like to dock the taskbar to the right.  :P

Thanks,

Johan

This is an empiric observation. When you choose to autohide the taskbar while positioned to the bottom (default), even if hidden it still has 2 pixels left (some are reporting even up to 4 depending of the the skin, the fonts, the position of the clouds on the sky, if MS loves you or not, etc). This can be verified with a screenshot. I believe that thin line of 2 pixels is what's activating it to show up again when you get to the edge.

When position to the right, and autohiding, it doesn't leave behind any thing line, so any maximized application will take the whole screen, left-right. Hence you don't have how to call it back when you get to the right edge (in this case).

If you really wanna be frustrated get a multi-monitor setup and try the same thing :).

Hi,

I can confirm the empirical observation, regarding the pixels at each edge. However, it would be a rash conclusion to blame MS.

Media Center is currently my only application not leaving pixels to the right. Firefox, Eclipse, and other applications built for several platforms behaves correctly.

This causes me to believe that it is a UI framework issue realted to Media Center.
