Remote Control T9 Mobile style search in theater view.
« on: July 01, 2009, 03:45:00 am »

I'd suggest to change the numeric search feature from "classic style" mobile search for names to a T9 style search.

10 button pushes when searching with the classic style for "Tool"
o 8 "T"
o 6 6 6 "o"
o wait
o 6 6 6 "o"
o 5 5 5 "l"

4 button pushes with T9 style + disambiguation, maybe:
o 8 6 6 5

Are you suggesting deploying one of the predictive search patented technologies, or developing something different that behaves in a similar manner? I'm not familiar with the technology, but I'd be surprised if that which works for general texting would be of much use for media database searching.

For searching a list, it's probably overkill but it would be nice in text entry areas.

I'm not sure what the patents on T9 cover / entail, but this could be a problem.

Well, if you remove "predictive" from the search in MC, I think you're on safe grounds :) .

i.e. there is no memory of previous entries for a certain numerical combination. You use no algorithm to predict what you are about to write. It is no longer T9 according to the patent.

What you could display though, is an alphabetical list of all possible existing combinations in the current view for the entered numericals.

Btw, where did the numbers go in the remote control configuration page?!
