Diskeeper
« on: July 13, 2009, 07:16:00 pm »

Hi all,

Has anyone tried using diskeeper on your HTPC?

My movies paused then fast forward to catch up all the while keeping the sound on.

I am not sure if this is because it is conflicting with MC.

Cheers

Shouldn't be affecting things, I've had Diskeeper running in the background for years with no ill effects.

To be of any more help, we really need to know what you're trying to play and your computers specs.
Playing HD (720p plus) stuff on an underpowered computer could easily cause this sort of issue, as could playing 'normal' videos on anything about a P3 or lower.

Hi,

I was playing my normal avi files.

I have never had this problem before installing diskeeper is there some setting that I should know about?

My HTPC is a Pentium E22202.4gh x 2 2g of ram.

Cheers for the help

It shouldn't be doing it obviously :)
If you uninstall Diskeeper does it stop?

I'd also be looking at any other system changes/ driver updates you've made in the last few weeks; This could be just a co-incidence.

Someone else may have some better ideas.

Yes uninstalled and it has stopped.

I have made no other changes on that machine.

I would like to use diskeeper but I need to know if I have set something that would make this happen.

I had some problems with Movies not being in sync with the sound as well. It did never catch up however. The problem was some bad codec settings. Might be you're case as well?

I use Diskeeper on my HTPC Win2003Std server on 7TB RAID volume without any problems about a few years. I also use it at the working win-servers with same statistic. I think his main advantage - a very precise definition of free resources and use them very carefully.

First question, have you turned off Stealth Patrol?
That's the only background service it should be running full-stop. Even if you haven't, I'd still be looking at updating all your drivers, as this could be an odd driver conflict.

Also test if it's only MC that has the stuttering, or whether this is a system-wide issue :)

Data, data, more data  ;D

Hello,

What is stealth Patrol??
All drivers are up to date.
Rest of the system ok.
MC plays perfect now that I have taken off diskeeper.
I use Mcaffe virus software and cccodec pack.

FYI, I too use Diskkeeper, have for years, and I've never had an issue.

I don't really have to do anything special with it.  It just works for me.  My guess is that it is conflicting with your McAfee AV software, which is often a piece of junk, but that's just a guess.

You could have a drive going bad too though.

I'd wonder if you really need Diskeeper on a HTPC?

A bigger question might be, how many people here have HTPC's without it, and do they suffer because of it?
Maybe it's just my way of doing things with Media, I only ever add and tend to replace my disks yearly on account of my collection doubling in bytes that often.... hence the possability of fragmentation is pretty low!
Totally agree with Glynors comment about McAffee....

Here I am back again.

Well as I said diskeeper has been removed but the problem occured again once last night.

Is Mcafee scanning my files?

Should I remove Mcafee?

The movie pauses all by itself but the sound is still going then it fast forward the video and catches up the sound.

All your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Can someone help with power settings on HTPC as this may be the problem.

I was trying to save the disks by turning off the Hard Drives after 1 hour.

How do I stop the disks from spinning whilst not being used?

Cheers
