Problem with recording from microphone
« on: July 11, 2002, 10:09:05 am »

I'm trying to record and convert old audio tapes via the mike input on my PC. After selecting Tools -> Record sound, and clicking on Start, the dialog box displays "Waiting for sound". Fine so far, but after starting the tape player which is attached to the PC mike input via a patch cord, nothing happens. I can unplug the tape player from the patch cord and hear the tape just fine, but MJ doesn't detect the sound.

Any ideas on what to try next?

On the Windows controls, is "Mic" muted?

Also, there is help here:

Nope, not muted.
OK, I'll start from scratch and step through the whole process again.

And if your sound card has a "line-in" jack, definitely use that instead of microphone input. The mic in expects a much lower level and therefore boosts the level which creates distortion. The "line-in recording tips" discusses this.
