Feature request - Colouring rows in views/playlists
« on: August 16, 2009, 11:33:44 am »

I regularly DJ Argentine tango using MC - after having tried far too many music organisers and players I have to say that MC is a clear win for my requirements.

A feature which would  be extremely useful in visualisation of my music library, and even more so during DJing would be a way of changing the display colour/background of entire rows in a view. For viewing my library contents, colour coding according to genre/artist/rating/etc would help editing and creation of playlists. As for DJing, Argentine tango is usually played in regularly structured tandas - 3-5 songs (usually by the same orchestra and from the same period), separated by short snippets of some other type of music, called cortinas. Being able to colour code cortinas, and the genre of the music would really help me visualising the playlist as I add/move things around during DJing. I see this use applicable also to DJing of other genres, and in general for music organisation.

Am I right in saying that there is currently no way of getting this functionality? Possibly integrating this with views - allowing colours to be set to smartlist-like filters - could be a way of not adding clutter to the rest of the interface. Am I the only one craving for such a feature?

You can't color code, but there are some other things you should look at.

For example, grouping is a fast way to visually separate file in a list.  You can group by any field.

Also, you can add an 'Expression Column' to a view that will say anything you want depending on some criteria.  It'll require a little setup, but you can make a column that says 'Orange', 'Yellow', 'Red', etc. based on any input criteria.

Finally, quick search (Ctrl+Q) allows you to type and have certain text highlighted.
