Retain Playlist Order in a View
« on: September 19, 2009, 12:26:09 am »

I've got a playlist of about a dozen albums in a certain (arbitrary) order.  I tried creating a view based on this playlist and simply grouping by Album.  Unfortunately, MC not only groups but it alphabetizes the album names - not what I want.

Is there a way to create an album view from a playlist, grouping on album (name) without re-ordering?

If not, I guess I'd have to create a new library field - something like [# - Album Name] and group on that?

When using a playlist as the source for a View, shouldn't it's (the playlist's) order be respected and not overridden by "Group by"?

Seems to me that this is a bug... unless I'm making incorrect assumptions, or doing something wrong.

Anyone?

Would appreciate some comment/response from the JR folks, especially my 2nd paragraph in the first post.

Grouping always sorts.  Imagine grouping a shuffled list without letting it sort -- it'd be a mess where each grouping would contain one item.

Thanks, Matt.

So, "Group By" really means "Group and Sort By"... I see.

I ended-up creating two new fields and using those to preserve the playlist Album order in my view.  More effort than I intended but it works, thanks to the great built-in flexibility of MC.

My playlist was already grouped by album when I created it, just not alphabetically.
