Help with a smartlist
« on: August 11, 2009, 10:03:31 pm »

I can't get this to sort randomly...
[Media Type]=[Audio] [Complete Album]=1 [Rating]=>2 ~a ~sort=Random

It sorts by artist and then by album. I just want a jumbled list of all my 3+ rated albums so I can browse when I can't decide what I want to listen to. What can I do to get it sorted randomly?

Code: [Select]
[Media Type]=[Audio] [Complete Album]=[1] [Rating]=>2 ~sort=Random ~a ~t=8hThis is what I use for this purpose. The one difference is that I don't use the rating to key off of. I don't think that'll do anything funny in there though. I also limit the list to 8 hours so I just get a handful of albums.

mesue, using your exact smartlist in a new smartlist here, I get a shuffled list.

If you look at the view header menu, (hover your mouse over the smartlist name at the top of the list 'till the menu pops up), check under the "Sort by" sub-menu. You should see a little tick beside "Random". If you don't, try clicking there to re-enforce the sorting.

Does that help?

I'm still using MC13, by the way. I posted here because that forum seems to be retired now. Also, I have the display set to Album thumbnails. Sort Inside Groups by is set to Random. For thumbnail text I have:
[Artist]
[Album] ([Date])

But it still sorts the same if I take that out.

I have tried every option under "Sort inside groups by" and they all work except Random.

MC13 bug, perhaps?

Could someone else with MC13 please try the smartlist I posted in message 1 and let me know if you get random sorting?

Thanks.

It's the album thumbnails.

I'm using v14 here and see the same as you.

Switch to details, with, or without grouping, and the list is shuffled.
Switch to album thumbnails, and the list is not shuffled.

Hmmm... I wonder if that is by design, or a bug? With all that MC can do, you'd think there would be a way to do this.

I do have another smartlist where I limit it to 15 albums and it pulls randomly, but still sorts by artist and then album. I got tired of hitting refresh if I didn't find something in the batch I was shown, so I wanted one that gave me a huge jumbled list I could scroll through until something caught my eye.

This has now been fixed. You'll need MC14 Build 14.0.72 or higher (14.0.79 currently available from the 14 forum)

Tangential to this topic, what do folks think about a friendly policy of the Helpees adding the smartlists that Helpers have provided to the MC Wiki?  This allows others to search / explore a general SmartLists, Expressions, and Playlists page for help, where the collection continues to grow.  I'm thinking it would include:

  • the expression
  • a very brief explanation of what the smart list does
  • link(s) to the thread in Interact where the help was provided

This also helps spread the load amongst MC users: Helpers get to help, and Helpees contribute something back.  Interact is good, but very difficult to search, especially for many of the terms found in expressions (eg. album, artist).
