syncing to a (relatively) large volume - very slow to start
« on: October 30, 2009, 09:42:12 pm »

Hello,
I am syncing a playlist to folder on a 2.5" USB2 drive (320GB, 5400 RPM).
The drive holds about 25,000 mp3 files which take about 200GB of space.
My library is on a network drive (GB LAN).
When I connect the drive, MC14 checks the sync and this process takes a very long time - 10-15 minutes. (actually, the log says 1240000 ms = 20 min 40 sec)
Is this normal?
8GB ipod shows its content immediately. As far as I remember my (dead now) 20GB Karma didn't have much of a delay either....
Any idea?

Thanks!

So you're using the Handheld sync to do this?

Depending on how you're doing it, building the playlist could take some time.

On a new setup, analyzing files and building thumbnails could also take time.  After a while, it will be faster.

But I'm trying to understand why you would do this.  Is it really a portable device?

If it's only a network drive, it would be better to keep your media there, and the library on the local drive.

You could turn on logging and read the logs to see what is slow.

Jim - thanks!

It's a hard drive but it's a "handheld" (is there really a difference?).
It sits in my car connected to a carputer. Once in a while I take it out and load some new music on it connecting it to my desktop.
It's configured as a handheld in MC and when I select Sync handheld (I am syncing to a playlist which contains about 30,000 items mp3+folder.jpg), MC shows a "working..." message which stays there for 15-20 minutes. After that MC shows the content and shows what's to be deleted or transferred. The sync itself goes pretty fast.

I guess it's normal - the drive is large and slow and it's usb...

sheesh.. I am syncing it again and it's ridiculously slow. When I click on this "handheld" which is 320Gb 2.5" harddrive, MC gives me "Working...." message while it sniffs the drive for 20-30 min, after that all is fine and the sync itself goes fast.

I guess it's my punishment for having a large collection of music and a slowish harddrive.

So, is this something to be expected? Can this be improved somehow? Why it's so slow? MC puts a Database.mpl file in the root - all info should be there, no? (In my case this file is 17Mb)
I am doing my routine sync and again it's taking 20-30 min to "initialize" the "handheld".

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the reply.
I'll check my v-checker.

But, do you think it _should_ be faster?
Thanks!

A virus checker?

or this problem?
