To Matt about album artist thing...

>>I don't follow. [Album artist] is [Artist] if there is no [Album artist] specified.

Can you give a more detailed explanation of what's happening, and what you expect to happen?

OK Matt, I'll try to explain without getting to long and drawn out....

In the ID3 tag, there is a field for Artist and a field for Album Artist.  If the Album is by one artist, say David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, then both fields will display David Bowie.  When I rip the CD, in options, I choose the Directory Rule of "Artist\Album" and the Filename Rule of "Artist - Name".  MJ will create a David Bowie directory and inside, create a Ziggy Stardust folder with all the songs stored as "David Bowie - Name of each song" in that folder.  This is the format I use for all my cd ripping.

The problem comes when I have albums with more than one artist such as movie soundtracks or compilation albums (example: "The Greatest Rock Hits of the 70's")  With these albums, the Artist field will  have the name of the artist for each individual track and the Album Artist field will be "Various Artist" for all tracks.  Now when I go to rip this CD using the same options as before, MJ will create a directory for each artist on the album and a folder in that directory with the title of the album and then the file (example: David Bowie/Greatest Rock Hits of the 70's/David Bowie - Suffregette City).  I wind up with a directory for each artist on that album when all I want is a directory called Various Artist.
What I would like when I am ripping the albums with "Various Artist" as the album artist, is for MJ to create a directory called "Various Artist" (if one dosn't already exist) and in that directory a folder with the album title and in that folder, all the tracks on that album (example: "Various Artist/Greatest Rock Hits of the 70's/David Bowie - Suffregette City").
By doing it this way, I will have a directory called Various Artist and ALL of the albums that contain various artist will be in that directory.  The albums by a single artist will be in a directory bearing the name of that artist.  Basically, using the Album Artist field as the directory name, and the Arist field for the filename.

I hope this makes some sense to you as to what I am referring to.
If you can make an extra option in the Directory Rule for "Album Artist\Album" and keep the "Filename rule" as "Artist - Name" then the world would be good.
This should apply to both ripping and burning CD's as well.

Thank you for your patience with me on this.

I'm not sure if this will help but this is the method I use when ripping a CD with various artists.

For the directory rule I set it to ALBUM
For the file rule rule I set it to ARTIST - TRACK# - NAME
When the CD is ripped I go in the tag and fill the Artist\Album field with whatever is appropriate.

If its a soundtrack I enter soundtrack and this will produce a tree view of Soundtracks-Album-Artists.

If it's a dance compilation I enter dance compilation and this will produce a tree view of Dance Compilation-Album-Artist.

basically you can set Album\Artist to whatever you want and it will produce the effect as described above.

Hope I've managed to explain myself ok. It took me ages to get my head around the whole file naming thing but when you get it it's great.

Thanks Ton-up.
That is basically what I do now.  It works OK when ripping.  I just use Album in the directory rule and point it to my Various Artist folder.  It's a little more work in that you have to make sure that you set the path prior to ripping.  If I forget to, then my single artist albums wind up in my various folder, or I get just the album title of the compilation albums in my main album directory.
This doesn't work when burning data CDs though, as MJ will not create a Various Artist folder for those Albums.  Matt had changed it briefly in one of the builds to creat a directory using the Album Artist, but when creating the file name, it also used the Album Artist, so I wound up with file names like, "Various Artist - Suffregette City".
Thanks,
Chico

NOTE:  ID3v1 tags only support Artist...ID3v2.x tags support Artist & Album/Artist and whatever else you want to create/invent.  I did not read this entire post, just the first sentence and wanted to clarify ID3 in that first sentence.

Thanks, ZRocker.
Yeah, I knew that. Guess I should have been a little more specific.  But I use ID3v2.

Cool!  You were in Philly then?  Did you live there?
That was a great concert!  I also remember Lynyrd Skynyrd's last concert at the the old Vet stadium.  I guess it was around '77 - '78.
That was a kickin concert!  Skynyrd was the openning act for Frampton.  Kinda funny, after Skynyrd wound up their gig with Free Bird, that place was rockin (90K plus packin the stadium, Frampton came on singing "Do what you do".  Kind of a let down after Free Bird.  People started to leave. :), plus, there was a flyers game and the Ringly Bros and Barnum & Baley circus was lettin out at the same time!  I had a lot of time for attitude ajustments waitin in the parking lot (not that my attitude was adjusted enough by then).

If you have a new enough build of 8.0, ALBUMARTIST is a valid keyword for file/directory creation.

So, just make your rule ALBUMARTIST\ALBUM

Does that do the trick?

Thanks.

ThanX, Matt.
I was unaware of that.  I'll try it tonight and see.

Worked great Matt!
Wish I had known that a while ago.  Could have saved us both some headaches, eh?

Which reminds me of a joke:

Why did the Jews wonder around in the dessert for 40 years?

Because even back then, men didn't want to read directions.

ThanX,
