Codec Pack on the server: Is it necessary?
« on: November 27, 2009, 10:53:05 am »

At home I'm using a WHS computer to store all my media, such as music (flac), photos (jpg) and video (DVDs, mkv and Divx Avi).
On this computer, I have installed MC14 and i'm running Library server. No codecs have been installed.
Accessing the video library from a client, Dvds, Avis and Mkvs show with a generic cover-art picture, unless I have tagged them.
On a similar (experimental) setup in the office (where the role of the server is played by a XP workstation with codecs installed), I can see from the client (for avis and mkvs), a cover-art for them, which is the first frame of the movie.
Is it because of the existence of codecs there and further, should I install them on the WHS also?

In order to generate thumbnails for videos on the server, MC needs to build DirectShow filter graphs.  That means it needs to load video decoders.
