I could only use tv remote to move through my library and this might be a bottleneck for biger library.
Do yuo want to browse alphabetically?  You can set up the menu structure in a very flexible way using MC and its DLNA server.  Taking the example of an alphabetical list by Artist (or Album Artist), your first step in you custom view might be Artist and "group by" 1.  This means that you will get an initial alphabetical selection of 26 items A to Z rather than a complete list of Artists, and provided your second step is Artist without any grouping, you can drill down into just the Artists beginning with the letter you select.  For remote-control access via a TV, I actually have 3 Artist steps at the beginning of my view:

Album Artist, group by 4
Album Artist, group by 1
Album Artist

This gives me an initial menu of:

A-D
E-H
I-L
M-P
Q-T
U-X
Y-Z

Then selecting, say the E-H item, will give me a menu of:

E
F
G
H

Then selecting, say, F will give me al ist of all artists beginnign with F.  This is a much quicker way of filtering down by artist via a remote-control.

Ideal for me would be to set up so that I turn media player on TV, which connects by default to MC15 library, but then I use my phone or pc to control library: selecting artist, album, controling volume, etc. Do you guys know if it is possible? That would enable me to skip one device in my set up.

This is what UPnp/DLNA was designed for!  By using a remote control on the playing device (the TV) you are using that device as both a browser (controller) and a player (renderer) for content residing on a server.  But I realised a long time ago (yes, even before the fashion for Touch came about!) that the 10ft user interface with a remote-control was very awkward and indirect and the natural way of doing it would be a touch device in the hand which is where you do your browsing and controlling, adn the playing device simply plays what you have selected.

The three elements (server, controller, renderer) can be separated and dedicated to devices that are best doing that particular job.  Most media centres, JRiver included, act as all three, where your content resides on a PC and you use a program on that PC to browse and select your music, adn the PC then plays your music.  However, JRiver goes that step further and allows each function to be separated.  It can act as a standalone server for other controllers and renderers to use, it can be a server and a controller whereby it can control another device, or it can be a renderer and accepts isntructions for other devices to play media.

What I'm currently setting up is a JRiver server, a network of renderers around the house (small WD TV Live boxes), and a controller running on an iPad.  Yes, you can indeed get controller software on an iPhone, iPod, IPad - I'm looking at PlugPlayer at the moment.  It should be possible to browse my collection on the iPad and send any piece of media to any of the renderers around the house.  We'll see how it all works!

The big sticking point is that it's sometimes difficult to find hardware and software that will work together, even though DLNA is meant to be a standard.  Some DLNA TVs for example might not allow you to control them from another device.  Have a look round these forums for compatible devices.

Very interesting and encouraging, thank you. Setting up with alphabet sounds great, although I have to spend more time to understand how to set it up. Knowing that it is possible is already a good step ahead.

It is interesting that you mentioned WD TV Live as I would consider that too if I know it would work as reenderer... I understood you still do not have set up with server, controller and reenderer working right?

I would like to have following set up:
1 MC15 as a server
2 NetRemote from Promixis running on HTC HD2 (WM device) as a controller. Alternatively WebControl through web browser on same device.
3 DLNA enabled TV, that plays different sort of streaming material, like youtube, flick etc.

I am confident about server and controller, as I use them today to play music in different audio zones. However my set up has I  audio cables running from PC to every audio zone. I was hoping to replace that audio cable with different solution. I would like to send the music that I have selected with controller from my server to my TV device. Simply because I already have TV connected to LAN, but I do not have any audio cables extended to this room. I would also prefer to avoid putting extra device, unless absolutely necesary. WD TV live is not that expensive to add on, but then again, why do we need it if TV is able to capture and play audio and video streams from net. Putting extra device in an audio chain is additional cost, opportunity for HW failure, more cabling, power sockets, etc.

Does anyone have TV set up as a reender, which plays whatever is selected by controller?

installed trial of MC15 and enabled DLNA. Samsung picked up library without any problems, found my music. I didn't load whole library, just few cd's, so library was loaded quickly on tv. I could only use tv remote to move through my library and this might be a bottleneck for biger library. This is why I try to get help here from more experienced users. I was not able to control playback on my tv by using web controls, but maybe I did't set it up correctly. Ideal for me would be to set up so that I turn media player on TV, which connects by default to MC15 library, but then I use my phone or pc to control library: selecting artist, album, controling volume, etc. Do you guys know if it is possible? That would enable me to skip one device in my set up. If this is not possible, I need to put a PC or drag audio cables from MC15 pc, both of wich are not that atractive....
When the DLNA TV acts as a renderer, the usual way of controlling it is to use the TV remote.
It may be a controllable renderer, some devices are, most are not.
If it's controllable it will show up in the Media Center zones under "Playing Now". If it shows up there you can just select it with the web remote.
otherwise you can only control it with the TV remote.
You can change how the Music looks by customizing the views. If you have playlists they will also show up on the TV which can make getting at stuff using the TV remote easier.

The WD TV Live definitely works as UPnP client/browser, i.e. you can set up a DLNA server in MC15 and you can browse it and play items via the W's own remote control and TV user interface.

It also works as a Zone in MC15 and you can control it remotely from MC15 and indeed from MC15's WebRemote.

However, I have had very mixed results in connecting to any servers and renderers using a variety of freely-available Windows software, e.g. foobar2000, eezUPnP, Cidero, Kinsky, Intel UPnP Tools...  some of which can also behave as servers, controllers or renderers or a mixture, but they all have their own issues, cannot connect to server, can connect to server but cannot select items to play, can't see the renderer, can see the renderer but can't select it, can see both server and renderer but cannot send an item from one to the other, can play an item but cannot ffwd/rew....  I have a working server and a working renderer, it's just a question of finding the right controller.

The big gamble I've just made is buying an Ipad...

I am just hoping that one of PlugPlayer or media:connect (the two well-known UPnP controllers available on the IPad) will work with my equipment.  Otherwise it'll be a very expensive way of playing Pacman...

Exactly.  Boxes like this are DMA's (Digital Media Adaptors), they allow "legacy" equipment to use modern technology.  If your TV is already DLNA-capable, you don't need an adaptor box.

If it's controllable it will show up in the Media Center zones under "Playing Now". If it shows up there you can just select it with the web remote.

This is great news. I lookked in "Playing Now" within WebRemote control as well as within MC15, both of them have the name of the PC where MC15 is installed and "TV". So I guess TV was recognized. Clicking on "TV" however does not bring me any further. I first tried webremote, clicked on TV, then the song name disappeared and I could not control playback. I have then selected "PC" in playing now zone list, the I could see the name of the song I was playing. Controlling it still did not work, need to read more about it some setting might be wrong somewhere... At this point I am very interested to see how can I control playback on TV using webremote. This is because my carpenter is ready to finish the wall and I still not sure how many devices I will put there... he is a bit annoyed... Please, push me to the right direction one more time, it looks like MC15 and my Samsung UE40B7050 could be winning combo.

Doubled clicked TV within MC15 and then I got an error message "There was a problem controlling the selectected DLNA device. Double check your device, server and network settings...

Philips 46PFL7605H DLNA.

Plays with MC15. You have to check at "Media Network - DLNA server" .

Audio conversion - Never convert

Video conversion - Never convert

In "Advanced" you can leave everything unchecked or check only "DLNAExtra"

DO NOT check "Advanced - DLNA" because files like AVI change suffix to ".ts" and can't play from TV.

- I can't find yet how I can see external subtitles.

If somebody have a solution please respond.

You should try turning on the "present subtitle resources" and "present caption resources" under Advanced. I'm not certain you are going to get all of the information your TV requires without the DLNA flag set though.

The difference between setting and not setting the DLNA flag for video is mostly that you are preventing MC from sending video and audio codec information to the TV. If your TV handles a lot of formats you might want to try "never convert" for video.

Just got a Panasonic VIERA TC-P50ST30 last night, ran a quick check and it could play audio, video and images. Got a couple of media not supported messages when playing to the TV from MC16 but I probably just need to adjust supported formats. Will check out in more detail next week.
