MJ being ported to Linux!
« on: July 02, 2002, 10:22:16 am »

Yay!
I was just browsing messages and stumbled across this from a few days ago:

>
>We're porting to Linux now. We may have a simple player later this year, but it will take at least a full year from now to duplicate much of the functionality of the Windows version.

Oh My GoD!

Is it true?!?

If so, that is the best news I have heard in a while.
If JRiver actually pull this off, the Linux world won't know what hit us!(them/us you know what I mean )

MJ is probably the biggest reason why I spend more time in Windows than I should. (my supervisor doesn't like it)

I can't wait.

I can see this will make a big impact with all the Linux systems flying off the shelf. (Not)

I would prefer the program Stay in windows, i do not think Linux sales will justify the cost in converting it.

Now if Linux sales from base systems were up i would say maybe, this way MJ could brake into the Linux realm and steal the show.

I just don't think Linux is there yet, or ever will.

It's true.  You may not know that JRiver has made Windows/Unix connectivity software since 1987, so we like Linux.

We're most interested in the set top box and appliance possibilities.  We will probably first have a player engine that is controlled from a browser on another device connected by (wireless) TCP/IP.  You might think of the second device as a more sophisticated remote control.

King

Do not stand on your side on this
Not Linux as we know it.But a Linux OS,NOT FREE,but much cheaper than Windows.
And i may say in 'one flavour',not like now X versions

It may not be the case in USA,but i can tell you that around me ,here,in France,in Germany, in England, 90% of the people in music will change for Linux or Mac the day there is softwares like MJ for Linux or Mac.
Me the first, but JimH does not love me...i want a Mac Media Jukebox

China, part of France and since few weeks Germany gouvernements moved to Linux, not usung Windows anymore

well personally I don't care.

the problem comes in when talking about profit for a company.

1. How Many Computers Were Sold With Windows
2. How Many Computers Were Sold With Linux

with each there is a percent that will buy the MJ program

With Linux the percent is much lower than windows, that being the case does it pay the company to devote there resources in developing a product for Linux.

if you could force feed the product to the users when they buy the computer, then maybe yes. but since Linux sales are low then I will say the answer is no.

if you go to any store in the US and you look for anything that will run on Linux you are out of luck.

For Our Best Buy here in my town we had 2 full rows for the Mac in 1997. now there is none. Linux none. windows 5 rows.

it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out the profit and loss.

I am sure than concerning USA ,you are rigth

But it is not the same outside USA.With many more millions people than in the US
In England at Tower records you can surf the web if you want-not free-
And all the Towers records have Mac no Windows

I am like you ,i do not care that much.
But if more softwares for music for Mac,i would buy a Mac.I dream about it

I see more and more 'the internet word' going to a two sides

USA with Windows,RIAA,copie protection and all the mess, and the rest of the world,a mix of Linux,Mac ,Windows. With Linux leading.
And of cause some copie protection. But not the waffen SS look alike RIAA one

USA is the country where people use the less pirate softwares.A good point in my opinion.I will say that americans are the most honest computer users
As a thank ,they get arrassement from Windows,RIAA and so on
But in another hand ,from outside, you fell that people in the US do not react.

Let me tell you about DVD with zones.DVD for TV,not for computer

Last summer i found everyone with a DVD in France.Friends,family.
One day i was asking about zones ,if it is compatible with Israel

The answer:if the seller does not tweaks the DVD ,people just do not buy it.I speak about people in they 40's,50's with good jobs, not 18 years old hackers.Almost everyone in France has a tweaked DVD,included my 75 years old father!
So if they want to sell Windows computers with security on it...good luck!
And do you think that my DVD room has zones? of cause not, tweaked ,not by me ,by the shop

Yes, that would be nice and I will be one of the first to buy a license.

I'm tired of using XMMS at work where we mostly use Unix (Solaris/Linux).

Actually there are companies which convert windows products to linux version. I saw a linux version "The Sims" (converted by another company, not EA) from a web store.

I support this project. Please tell the public which linux distributions MJ can run smoothly on when the project is done. ICU (linux icq program) closes every 5 minutes when running mandrake 8.2

The Sims runs on Linux because of a technology called WineX, developed by TransGaming. They teamed up with Mandrake to release the Mandrake Linux Gaming Edition.

WineX is a superset of Wine, developed specifically to emulate DirectX 8 in Linux.

Which brings up an interesting point: hasn't anybody of you Linux users tried to run MJ in Wine ?

Wouldn't it be faster to first make sure MJ runs in Wine (I don't know if MJ or Wine has to be modified, or both) ? If this succeeds, the Linux fans can already use it, and it will ease the pain of waiting for a full Linux version.

Of course we've tried. Wine doesn't run MJ. Porting is the only way.

And BTW, excellent job and congratulations on this brave step forward, JRiver!
