Well... I thought I'd make an energy efficient file server with the new Intel Atom D510MO board..
My old setup was:
AMD BE-2300 (low power CPU, 45W), 4x500Gb RAID5 plus a 1Tb drive plus a 80Gb system disk.
This system was drawing about
90W without heavy load.
About a year ago I built a carPC based on Intel Atom 945GCLF2 and was surprised by its <30W power consumption. And it was supposed to be just 4W for the CPU the rest was to the inefficient chipset.
So, I thought the new D510 would be even better.
I went to Fry's and got myself a D510 board and 2x2Tb green WD drives. Tested this out and got
55W power draw at idle. Not bad. THEN, I put those green WD drives into my old server instead of the 4x500Gb RAID and got
65W power draw at idle.
I am staying with my old system. Just replacing the 4x500Gb with 2x1Tb drives. The Atom (only 2 SATA, 1 PCI, no PCI-E) goes back to Fry's.
Anyone needs 4x500Gb drives by any chance (2 Seagates and 2 Samsungs)? Lightly used.
