running mc 13 and mc 14 at the same machine
« on: March 03, 2010, 09:47:51 am »

i have two libraries, and its a bit of a pain to manage. now im thinking about installing mc 13 again for one of them. what i was wondering:
is it possible to run both mc 13 and mc 14 at the same time? also when one runs media server?
is it possible to disable plugins for mc 13 and have them run in 14?
are there some unexpected places where the two interfere?
do people have expereince with a set up like that?

 :)

The answer to most of your questions is yes. One of my PCs has MC11.1, MC12, MJ12, MC13 and MC14 installed.

Just install MC13 and test what happens (and report). You can't "downgrade" an MC14 library, but you can export all file data to an MPL playlist file and import it to MC13. The plugins and servers are separate. You might even be able to run two server versions at the same time if you set them to use different ports (I have never tried that). Naturally the clients must be the same version as the server.

EDIT

"Are there some unexpected places where the two interfere?"

I think the answer to this question is no.

thanks a lot Alex. that is what i hoped. i dont care so much about not being able to downgrade. my main media stays in 14. the other is more for organizing documents and soundfiles from my own... ill import them again.

oh.. and i report when i might stumble over something, just for when somebody else wants to do the same....
thanks again.

I also have similar experience with few versions of MC on one machine. This is MC12 for MJ12 clients - and I write oldstyle MJ tags for compatibility with it, MC13 as main home db (now removed), and MC14 in alfa state (now main base). Only one instance of MC can autoupdate file tags - now its MC14.
Only two minuses - possible conflicts with the shell integration and nag screen about new version after reboot )

thanks morrison, i thought about shell integration, but i have that disabled anyway. with the screen that 'nags' about the new version, you mean the screen you can disable under options>startup>check for updates?

have to reprogram girder a bit, but i have faith it will work well..

One more report of multiple versions working. I have had 12, 13 and 14 running on one computer with no issues. As a programmer I was rather surprised at how well that works. It points to good design on JRiver's part...

I'd suggest making sure only ONE version of MC has "enable shell integration" turned on.

Any version after v11 supports side-by-side installs.

When switching cores (launching another version of the program), you may be prompted for UAC elevation.  This is done to allow registering components needed for the active core.
