Did RealPlayer finally come to it's senses?
« on: June 29, 2002, 06:35:48 am »

I was just on the RealPlayer website and I noticed that the player has been priced at 19.95 instead of that ridiculous 9.95 a month. I wonder what made them come to their senses?... unless of course I'm reading it wrong. A mediocre player and library and incredible spyware to boot and they wanted you to pay 9.95 a month?... SHEESH! Like P.T. Barnum said: There's a sucker born every minute, but I guess this time the public wouldn't bite.

I am using RealOne player BASIC only. Its new interface is good, and functions still the same but just added an webbrowser....

Actually, what is Real's selling point? Is its video function better than MJ or Windows media?

a Q about RealOne:

Has anyone tried encoding (ripping) some tracks (or a CD) with RealOne?

I ask because I am curious as to what format it uses.
I have seen mention of ATRAC3 on the Real site.
Does the new Real stuff now encode to sony's ATRAC3 format?
-or are they still "Real" files?

-or are they "Real" files that are now compatible with Sony's MD players?

???

can anyone explain this to me.

thanks,
peleton.

Regarding question about ATRAC3 format, as a recent NetMD purchaser I can tell you (although far from an authority) that support for Sony's NetMD products is a recent addition to RealOne Player (ROP). Sony's NetMD products come "crippled" with OpenMG software, which was (prior to ROP) the only software that would write to the NetMD devices. Now ROP has added support, offering NetMD users another way to save music to MD. See www.minidisc.org for more info.

OpenMG was basically a media jukebox with added support for copyright protection. Tracks are "checked-out" to your MD player, and must be "checked-in" when you're done listening to them. Although OpenMG recently added support to import MP3 files, loosening the imposed copyright restrictions, the software is still kind of buggy. Since their user audience is so small, they seem unmotivated to improve the software.

I would love to see MJ add NetMD support, but I'm sure Sony and RealNetworks are probably going to be exclusive about the NetMD support. Oh well...

I use ROP for writing to my NetMD player, but I live in fear that they will make this a "subscription" feature in the future. I will NOT pay $120 per year for their software, dang it!

So, from a PC users point of view is there no diference between a " .rmj " music file from Real (RA8) and an ATRAC3 " .wav" file from Sony (sony's ACM codec). ???

-this would mean that Real no longer make their own media files.
or rather their claim that "RealAudio has the best low-bitrate quality" is not quite true. -Sony would have that honour! ?

surely there must be some differences?

Do you use the ATRAC3 ACM?

what file extension do you use on the files?

(sorry for so many q's)
thanks

I had downloaded Mozilla 1.0 and there was a link to Real.com in there, I had clicked on it and it bought me to that page. I deleted that link earlier because I never cared for RealPlayer and now I can't find it.
