Anyone using an ION here? I'm trying to figure out if CUDA is working okay. I'm seeing about 35-40% cpu load w/ an ATOM 330 (1.6 dual).

Something doesn't feel right with CoreAVC 2.0 or FFDshow.....

Good thread!

What version of Haali Media Splitter are you using?  FFDShow?  Multiple installation of Haali Media Splitter (many different programs install it)?

Using coreavs haali splitter.

As I said it works without the other filters.

I just wanted to know what is supposed to be in there.

Go to

Tools > Options > File Types > Video > Matroska Video (mkv)

Select Haali Media Splitter in "Source Filters".  The Configure button to its right should be enabled.  Click it.  You should get Haali's property pages.  It tells you which version it is.  See my attachment for example.

Others have reported issues with that version - try the latest at http://haali.su/mkv/ (download is the top right hand corner)

I have installed the latest Haali splitter and using FFDshow filters, MC still crashes.

If I put JRiver bitrate moniter and directvob sub its fine.

Funny though If I use the FFDshow on my other machine it works ok
I have all the same codecs loaded the only difference is its in stereo.

CoreAVC is the only codec I have successfully gotten a completely stutter free picture from 1080P content.

+1
yep, CoreAVC is definitely worth $10 or so... really MUCH faster than anything else I have tried.

Your log file does not contain any info about a crash.  Perhaps you restarted MC and emailed me the current log.txt?  I should have been clearer and told you to include "Previous Log.txt".  Whenever MC crashes, and you restart it to try emailing the log file, you should mail both 'Previous Log.txt" and 'Log.txt'.

Hi, sent again. Thanks

Your log shows that

1. you were playing an AVI file, not an MKV file when the crash occurred;
2. MC loaded a source filter, i.e. you selected a source filter in MC configuration for AVI type;
3. the crash occurred when MC tried to build a DirectShow graph.

Which source filter did you select for AVI files?  For AVI files, Automatic should be good enough in most cases.  AVI files normally are handled by a source filter called "File Source (Async.)".  DirectShow would automatically load this filter along with "AVI Splitter" if you do not select anything for source filter.  Haali Media Splitter can also handle AVI files.  However, its use is not necessary and should be discouraged unless you have a specific reason to use it for AVI files.  The only specific reason that I know is that your AVI files contain multiple audio streams and you want to be able to select which one you want to hear (and not hearing all of them).  If this is not the situation, I would just leave Source Filter at "Automatic".

If de-selecting source filter does not help, you can look at removing filters from your selected "Other Filters" list.  I see that you selected "ffdshow Audio Decoder", "ffdshow subtitles filter", and "ffdshow Video Decoder".  I'd remove them one by one and see if the crash goes away.

You selected VMR9 as your video renderer.  Normally this is perfectly fine.  There however can be DirectShow filters that just would not work well with VMR9.  So you can try selecting a different renderer, such as Enhanced Video Renderer, or Video Mixing Renderer 7.  Third-party renderers such as Haali Video Renderer can be used, but with caution.  They may not work for all situations, and thus should be used only if you know the stuff well.

Crash during graph-building usually suggests either corrupt file or corrupt DirectShow filters.  It could be that your DirectShow system is messed up badly by different applications installing different, conflicting DirectShow filters or different, conflicting versions of them.  There are tools that can help you sort out problems like this, but I do not remember what they are, only knowing that someone suggested something on this board.  Maybe someone will jump in and point you to the right direction.

If I put JRiver bitrate moniter and directvob sub its fine.

Then you should leave JRiver bitrate monitor in.  It monitors the bitrate of your video file dynamically without using much system resource.

Don't know if this is what you had in mind, but if CCCP is being used the most obvious thing to do is use it's Troubleshooting Guide. That starts with using it's Insurgent utility to identify and remove other possibly conflicting codecs. That seems to be a sensible thing to do—whether you're aware of any problems or not. It gives some assurance that any problem occurring in the future is probably due to something that was added or changed after CCCP was installed.

I attempted to use a number of tools like insurgent but found they were unable to help, possibly making things worse infact.  I believe this was because there was registry corruptions beyond registering and un-registering of the filters.  I ended up using K-Lite which just automatically repaired the situation when I installed it.  (Which is counter to other advice usually given not to use K-Lite, but you can always remove it again afterwards).  To be fair I've not had any problems since and haven't even removed K-Lite.

This may just be my case, and you may find your case does not need this.

I dont have two Haali splitters, I made sure of that. But I will try what has been suggested.
I also wish I could use something other than cccp as the new versions dont work for me I had to go back to the 2008 version.

What in the new version gives you trouble?  Is it the Haali Media Splitter?  I found the latest version of CCCP good, except its version of Haali Media Splitter.  So I installed CCCP (2009-09-09 version), making sure I unchecked Haali Media Splitter during installation, and then separately install the latest haali media splitter.

There is an alternative, as Mr ChriZ suggested, Klite.  It will install the common filters such as FFDShow, Haali, just as CCCP, but maybe more.  The reason we normally do not recommend Klite is because it seems to include too many filters, some may conflict with others.

Thanks for the advise, I followed the instruction and tried one filter at a time and the crashing was caused by ffdshow subtitle filter.

Its the 9-9-2009 and the betas that I have problems with.

its all to do with spdif passthrough. when I set that the ffdshow filters are all still enabled.

If I play a movie with dts once its fine but then I go and play a movie without dts thats fine then try go back and play the dts file again and the dts is not picked up. I have asked the forum on cccp and they dont seem to know what I am talking about. I asked for screen dumps on passthrough settings to no avail.

Cheers

Just my 2 cents:
- if the solution is to move from one codec pack to another codec pack, that's epic fail in my book. It's like we got tired thinking about it and we had to have some conclusion :).
- the latest ffdshow (and MPC-HC, and other things) it's at http://www.xvidvideo.ru/ The tryout sourceforge page is like 20 versions back.

Would it be a titanic hassle to just reformat your computer and come back to us for a "step-by-step,-this -what-you-should-install,-and-this-only" guide? I might even volunteer to spend some time helping out if we knew we were starting from scratch.

That would be good but surely all I would need to do is uninstall the codecs.

The HTPC itself is set on Output digital audio source.

There's nothing particularly wrong with KLite, as long as you don't get the "huge mega-pack version" and just blindly install everything.  It's gotten much better over the past two years.

The latest CCCP betas have the newer builds of FFDSHOW and newer versions of Haali's splitter.  I've been using them, and then adding CoreAVC 2.0, without issue.

I would install a codec pack.

CCCP is recommended by JR.

I like K-Lite.

Shark's is amazing... I believe it tries to clean out all other previous stuff first.

Maid... you may find that some codec packs, and some codecs never fully uninstall unless you use a good registry cleaner. It's a real nightmare. Shark's codec pack does seem to help in this respect though.
