Library showing a compilation album as 15 different albums
« on: April 30, 2010, 03:05:57 am »

Hello guys,

I seem to have a problem with the library seeing a compilation album being 15 different albums instead of one. I have made sure the artist tag in all the tracks is set to "various" and the album name is identical in each... but yet MC sees each track as a different album.

Here is a screen grab showing what I mean:

Any ideas why? I can upload one of the tracks if you want to check the tags, but I am sure they are all good... and the software I use (best ive ever found) is set to update ID3-1 tags when I update the ID3-2 tags, so it really should be working fine.

MC thinks songs belong to the same album if they have the same album title and album artist.
You can use the Artist to assign a specific artist to a track.

Album Artist (auto) tag needs to be the same for all songs involved.

For example:

I have an album called Totally Dance, it contains 15 tracks each by an different artist:

Artist = Artist name as required (for each track)
Album = Multiple Artists - Totally Dance
Album Artist (auto) = Multiple Artists

MC has some odd default settings with regards to this.

Hi guys
Ok, thanks for the input...
It does seem counter-intuitive that when you click on the Audio>Artist, it does not list the artists but the Album Artists... and that album artists column is not even visible in the default view. I have never even know of such a field. It should show that column and also the section under Audio should be called Album Aritist instead of Artist just to be consistent.

What happens if I globally remove the Album Artists field from all my MP3 files, will it then list the artists by Artists rather than Album Artists?

Thanks for the help,
Mark.

IMHO, MC has some great default settings. It works fine when the files don't contain incorrect Album Artist tags.

These old threads might explain the logic better:

The links are in no particular order. The first link is possibly the most comprehensive.

Thanks, I will have a read.
I think it would be a LOT more logical and intuitive if the Audio > Album Artist would be renamed to Album Artist instead of Artist. The way it is implies it is showing you the Artists. It is not, it is showing the Album Artist list!

But yeah, once you know what it is doing, then it makes sense.

Cheers mate

Ripping multi artist albums in to different directories by default doesn't seem that great to me?
That happens regardless of the tags.
I imagine many users never come here to find out why it does this....

edit: what i think is happening i posted in a bug thread not so long ago:
Quote
this also happened to me in the for last mc14, but could not reproduce it. now it was clearer. im ripping two multi artist albums. the first one i had to fill in everything, and ripped nicely to the assorted folder. the second disk was found on yadb, also good filled in with multiple artists, but ripping started to put the filles in seperate artist folders. because i was allert after the last time, i broke of. removed the artist folders, and, for the hell of it, clicked submit to online database. clikced rip again and it is ripping now to the assorted folder. i did not change a thing in the tags.
