MJ locks up on ASF files
« on: June 26, 2002, 02:55:13 pm »

Interesting issue, don't know if it's a bug or not... I have some very large ASF video files that I'm trying to play. The files are 120-140MB in size. When I d-click on the files in Explorer MJ will play about the first 3 seconds and then locks up. If I drag the files to the Playing Now window and try to play that way, MJ just buffers and then locks up. One interesting thing is that there is a little red note next to the asf file in Playing Now versus an MPEG movie that has the little speaker icon.

One interesting thing that I forgot to mention was that these files play with no problem in WMP.  Maybe that's a clue?

try renaming file to WMV and see if that helps.
We can't reproduce it.

Tried renaming, still the same result.  I did manage to get them to play IF I hit C|PLS|A|PLS|D and then cancel the dialogue.  What happens is MJ will buffer again and then proceed to play normally.  If I don't then MJ will just stay locked until I End Task.  I can hear the audio but not see the video, and the interface will be unresponsive.  My specs again:

Got an update on this one.  I did a FRESH install of WinXP, formatted and everything.  Reinstalled all the drivers and updates so everything is up to date.  Installed 8.0.321 and tried playing asf files again, and same problem.  I've been looking for an older version so that I can test and see if it broke in a previous build.  My next option is to install 7.2 and see if that helps.  Any more ideas?  Thank all!!!

Can you give us an example of a file that doesn't work?

I can do that.  I just got one that is only 6 megs, so that wouldn't be TOO bad.  (Just ignore the content) ;) It's also unusual that I have a laptop running XP and it does just fine.  Like I said before, the files will play perfectly through WMP.  Also like I said before, the way I understand it is that MJ uses the WMP engine for playback of files.  This leads me to believe that there is some type of problem between MJ's call to WMP for buffering and playback of the asf files.  BUT it's ONLY asf files and renaming doesn't help.  I know that I seem to be the only one experiencing this problem, but I would like to get it fixed.  Perhaps there's a prog that you guys would have to help troubleshoot, like Matt did for v7 when I was beta testing it.  (At least, I think it was Matt.)  Any ideas or suggestions you may have would be great!  System specs the same as above...
