Can't use 4 channel DVD audio
« on: June 24, 2002, 05:46:13 pm »

When I go into the Audio DVD decoder properties only the 2 speaker options are available. The 4 channel and 6 channel options are greyed out.

The audio card is a Philips Acoustic Edge hooked up to a Klipsch 5.1 system. PowerDVD uses the extra channels with no problems as does Windows Media Player 8.0. This is all running on WinXP Pro.

I tried using the different sound drivers, directsound, waveout, windows default, and Philips WDM waveout to no avail.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure what the answer to the initial question is, but MJ will definately supports 5.1 Dolby Digital output if you have the right decoder.  I watch all my DVD's through MJ at home, and Dolby Digital output via SPDIF works great.

We'll dig around some more and see if we can figure out what's happening...

Thanks.

It's sort of a mess, because it all depends on what DVD playback filters you have installed.

I think I'm using the filters from WinDVD 3.0 (came with my DVD drive).  Then, when I pick the right audio output device in MJ's DVD options, the audio decoder properties page will enable the "SPDIF Output" option.  I think playing around is your best bet.

Oh, and I never got Dolby Digital working very well through my spendy M-Audio card.  However, when I dropped a cheapie SB Live! Value in, everything worked like a charm.

Not sure if that helps at all...

Take care.

Thanks for the replies.

The SPDIF option is available, but I don't have a external decoder.

I'm using the decoders that came with PowerDVD XP (4.0)

The only option available under the audio properties is 2 channel Dolby Surround. The 4 channel and 6 channel options are greyed out. I do have the latest 1.57 WDM drivers installed for the Acoustic Edge.

Maybe I should try a different DVD decoder engine? WinDVD perhaps?

Thanks again for the assistance!
