Playing Recorded TV using media server probs
« on: June 10, 2010, 04:27:58 am »

Hi
I would like to be able to record TV on one computer using media center and then watch the show streamed to another computer using media server
Currently I can find the program on the remote computer but when I try to play it I get the following error

"The media type of this file is not recognized. Code=0x80040240"

I have exactly the same codec setup on both computers and am able to play any other file that I have come across on both

Cheers
Rob

Just to be sure, do you have the latest version of Media Center installed on both?  My daughter watches hi-def kids programs on a laptop over wifi this way every day, so it should work really well.

What happens if you try to play a recording directly (network share or copy a recording folder) on the client instead of using Library Server?

Thanks.

I have the latest version on Media Center on both computers.
If I try and open the file directly over the network, I get a whole heap of .cnk files and dont know where to go from there

There will be a .jtv file in the same folder you should be able to play in Media Center.

Thanks for your help
It works fine if I play the file directly over the network

Would be easier if it worked using media server however. Clicking on a thumbnail is cetainly a better option than searching for .jtv files

Just wondering if there is a problem with my setup or if this is the only way of doing it.

If the later can I request it as a future feature

Cheers

You should be able to play recorded TV through Library Server.  Matt asked you to try playing it from shared folder just to try to diagnose the problem.

Library Server is refusing to server the television helper files because they're not in the library.  This is done for security, but television files are a special case and should be served.

For now, you can add your recorded television path to:
Options > Media Network > Library Server > Advanced Server Settings > Additional share paths

We hope to make this unnecessary in build 60 and later.

Thanks for your help.

Just to close the loop, coming in build 60:
Changed: Sharing recorded television over Library Server no longer requires additional configuration of white-list share paths.
