Tagging/Album Artist
« on: June 24, 2002, 09:50:06 am »

The vast majority of my library is albums by singe artists. However I have a handful of 'various artists' compilations etc. I know if I use the 'Album Artist' tag I can ensure I can see every artist correctly in my MJ library. But I cant find a way to do this easily for the 'standard' albums where artist = album artist within MJs file properties dialog. Is there a way to fill in the Album Artist tag en masse for these albums?

Stepping back a bit, I gather that there are issues with ID3v1/ID3v2 and album artist is a v2 tag. Should I even be using the v2 tags? Its confusing. If the King is listening, I know he is Mr Tagging, so Id be interested in his advice.

I know that this sort of thing has been covered before, but to be honest I cant make any sense of the archive posts I looked at. Guess Im moving on from 'just rip it and play it' to 'rip it, play it and make sure its organised properly'

PS Apparently 'The King' is number 1 in the UK charts at the moment - now overtaken the Beatles for most number 1s ever. Not bad for someone who died 25 years ago, but a bit sad that it took a Nike advert to get him there...

lee269,
If I understand correctly, What you would want to do is select a particular artist in the tree view under "Media Library-Artist/Album".  This should show every file you have for that artist and the albums containing the track.  Select all files that are NOT on a various artist album (should be all albums by that artist exclusively).  Press Alt |PLS| Ent to bring up the properties dialog box.  Change the Album Artist field to the name of the Artist and save.  This is the best way I can think of doing what you want.
Someone else may have a better suggestion, of which I would be interested in hearing.

Hi there.

The idea was that when artist = album, you just leave "album artist" blank and MJ will be smart enough to assume that it's the same as the song artist.  If there is someplace in the program where MJ isn't that smart, let us know and we'll fix it.

Oh, and I'd recommend using ID3v2 tags... there's not really any good reason to not use them.

Take care.

OK I get it now. I only need to populate the album artist tag where the album in question contains more than one artist. Dont have MJ here, but Ill try it out tonight. Ill also retain v2 tags.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

"unprincipled as the gods" and "an arrant, all-grasping intermeddling, monopolizing, heathenish old scamp"
"I clutch thy heart at last."

ID3v2:

"unless I should thereby drag thee to worse horrors than are here.

"Like Satan, would not sink to hell till she had dragged a living part of heaven along with her..."

"From Hell's heart I stab at thee. For hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee"

Elocution is: the art of speaking language so as to make the thought it
expresses clear and impressive.

No But I Am Braking Out In Hives, Just The Word "ID3v2" Has That Effect.

Matt was instrumental in the discovery of the Red Dust that temporarily banished the Visitors from Earth, and afterward he worked at Science Frontiers where he kept watch on Nathan Bates and brought information back to the Resistance.

I recall reading someplace that ID3v2 could create problems with vbr playback. Is there any truth in this? Something about the tag occupying the same space as vital vbr data? Appreciate feedback.

Never heard Of It, I Do Know On Some Early Versions Of Xing Headers There Was Problems, But That Was A Few Years Ago And All Has Been Well On The Yelow Brick Road.

There Are MP3 Players That Do Not Like VBR Due To Bad Programing In The Fermware In The Player It's Self.

There Is Also A Possable Coruption Of The Xing Header, But This Can Be Fixed Using A Program That Will Recreate The Xing Header. Normaly This Is Due To Wrong Play Time Or Frame Count In The Xing Header That Also Might Mean The MP3 Has Been Cut Off (A Napster Download?).

I told you it was confusing - Im still not clear on the reasoning behind these arguments, but perhaps its better not to know. My position is that I havent experienced any problems with playback so I guess Ill go along with Matt in that I have no reason not to use v2.

King: sorry to mention, well, you know what. Hope the hives get better. Im disappointed you were not listening to something by 'The Hives' at the time though.
