Hello

(Almost) Everything is in the question ...

in fact for what purpose are the icon or teh thumbnail used ?

In a file list, the "Icon" column will show a blue music note against files imported into the main library, and an orange music note against files not imported into the main library.

The "Thumbnail" column will show exactly the same thing, unless you have cover art attached, in which case, the column will show a small thumb of the cover art.

So, in the image below, using the two columns, it's easy to see which files are imported and which ones are not, and also just as easy to identify which have cover art and which don't.

That indicates that the file is unavailable. This is most commonly down to one or combination of, the following two reasons:

The file is on a network or removable drive that is currently unavailable,

OR

The file is on a local drive, but has been moved, renamed or deleted.
