FLAC Format
« on: August 31, 2010, 01:02:00 pm »

I have allways encoded my music to MP3, now I want to move, to encode my music in FLAC.

I have one qustion when I use the encoder in MC, I see the bit depth is 16, is this OK,
or should it be 24 bit.

Does it have any effect on the encoded music.

Thanks..... :)

24-bit  digital audio has a theoretical maximum dynamic range of 144 dB, compared to 96 dB for 16-bit; however, current digital audio converter technology is limited to dynamic ranges of about 120 dB (20-bit) because of 'real world' limitations in integrated circuit design.

Also if you are going to encode your music to 24bit than you need hardware that can play 24bit music.

If you rip a CD, it's 16-bit.  There would be no reason to store the data in any format other than the 'native' format (44.1 KHz x 16 bit x 2 channel).

Media Center can output at any bit depth during playback time, but this is a slightly different topic.  This is worth doing because the added precision is valuable if you perform any DSP.
